Chapter 7: What Richard Chose to Protect

“Richard was married to my mother?” Claire asked.
Eleanor stood in Daniel’s study the next morning, both hands around a cold cup of tea.
“For six weeks,” she said.
“The marriage was annulled before Richard met Daniel’s mother.”
Daniel placed the two halves of the trust on the desk.
“Then Victor lied on the recording when he claimed he was Claire’s father.”
“No.
Victor was her biological father.
Claire’s mother, Helen, married Richard after leaving Victor.”
Claire sat beside Daniel but did not touch him.
“Why did Richard protect me?”
“Because Helen asked him to.
She knew Victor wanted control of Samuel Reed’s trust.”
“Samuel wasn’t my father?”
“He was your grandfather,” Eleanor said.
“Helen was his only child.
When she d*ed shortly after the clinic fire, the shares passed to you.”
Claire covered her face.
“Every person I came from is gone.”
Daniel reached for her hand.
This time she let him take it.
“I’m here.”
“You doubted me.”
“I did.
I was frightened, and I made you pay for it.”
“That hurt more than anything Vanessa or Marcus said.”
“I know.” Daniel’s voice broke.
“If you cannot forgive me today, I will still stand beside you in court.”
Claire lowered her hands.
“Don’t stand beside me because of guilt.
Stand beside me because I’m your wife.”
“I will.”
Vanessa entered with two state investigators.
She avoided Lily, who was coloring near the window.
“I gave them Marcus’s recording and my messages with Victor,” Vanessa said.
“There’s something else.”
She placed a flash drive on the desk.
“Dad kept duplicate ledgers.
Every transfer Marcus made paid a company controlled by Victor.”
One investigator opened the files.
“This connects Victor to the missing millions,” he said.
“But we still need proof Claire’s trust existed before last night.”
Lily looked up from her picture.
“Grandpa Richard talked in my bear.”
Everyone turned.
“What do you mean?” Daniel asked.
Lily opened the teddy’s back seam.
Beneath the place where Marcus had hidden the tracker was a second compartment.
“Grandpa gave me this bear before he went away.
He said if Daddy forgot how to listen, the bear would remember.”
Daniel removed a tiny recorder.
Richard’s voice filled the study.
“Daniel, Claire is Helen Hale’s daughter and Samuel Reed’s lawful heir.
Victor forced the clinic to alter her records.
The original trust is filed under seal with Judge Miriam Cole.
If Victor moves against Claire, take this recording to her.”
Vanessa sat down hard.
“He knew Claire would marry you?” Daniel asked.
Richard’s recorded voice continued.
“I did not bring Claire into your life.
You found each other without my help.
Protect her because you love her—not because I failed to protect her mother.”
Claire leaned against Daniel, and he wrapped both arms around her.
Lily climbed between them.
Vanessa watched from across the room.
“I wanted what you had,” she whispered.
“A father who protected you even after he was gone.”
Claire wiped her tears.
“You had a choice when Lily told the truth.”
“I know.”
The investigator picked up the recorder.
“Judge Cole has called an emergency hearing.
Victor believes he is going there to remove Daniel from the company.”

Daniel stood.
“Then let him walk into the room thinking he has won.”
