Chapter 3: The Woman at the Door

Daniel pulled Lily behind him.

“Security, close that door.”

“Wait,” Claire said.

“Someone’s standing outside.”

An elderly woman stepped into the light.

Rain clung to her gray coat, and one hand gripped a leather medical bag.

“My name is Eleanor Price,” she said.

“I sent the message.”

Vanessa backed against the wall.

“You’re supposed to be gone.”

Eleanor looked directly at her.

“Your father has spent twenty-five years wishing I were.”

Daniel held up his phone.

“Why did you tell me not to let Claire leave with Lily?”

“Because a car was waiting beyond your gate.

Marcus put a tracker in the child’s bear.”

Lily clutched the teddy tighter.

“Mr.

Marcus fixed him for me.”

Daniel took the toy gently.

His fingers found a hard shape beneath the torn seam.

“Officer, open it.”

The officer removed a coin-sized device and placed it in an evidence bag.

Claire covered her mouth.

“They were following my daughter?”

“They expected you to run with her after Vanessa frightened you,” Eleanor said.

“The car was supposed to intercept you before you reached town.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“Marcus told me they were only going to bring Claire somewhere safe.”

“You locked me in a room,” Claire said.

“Was that your idea of safe?”

“I was trying to get the documents before Marcus did.”

“You raised your hand to my child.”

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“There is no excuse for that.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Then start giving us answers.”

Eleanor placed her medical bag on the table and removed a sealed envelope.

“Twenty-five years ago, I worked at St.

Matthew’s Clinic.

A fire damaged the maternity wing.

One infant was officially listed as lost.”

Claire’s knees weakened.

Daniel caught her elbow.

“No,” Claire said.

“My mother told me I was born at County Hospital.”

“The woman who raised you was not the woman who gave birth to you.”

Claire pulled away from Daniel.

“You don’t know me.”

“I know the scar beneath your left shoulder.”

Claire’s hand moved to it before she could stop herself.

Eleanor’s voice softened.

“You received that scar when I carried you through a broken window.”

Vanessa sank into a chair.

“Tell her the rest,” she said.

Eleanor turned the photograph over.

“The man beside Daniel’s father is Victor Hale—Vanessa and Marcus’s father.

He was also the man who ordered your record changed.”

“Why?” Daniel asked.

“Because Claire’s biological father owned forty percent of the company Victor wanted.”

Claire stared at Vanessa.

“Who was he?”

Vanessa’s lips trembled.

“Samuel Reed.”

Daniel knew the name.

It appeared on the oldest company documents, then vanished without explanation.

“My father said Reed sold his shares.”

“He never sold them,” Eleanor replied.

“He placed them in trust for his newborn daughter.”

Claire gripped the table.

“For me?”

The front doors opened again.

Victor Hale entered beside a tall man carrying a briefcase.

“Nothing in that envelope belongs to her,” Victor said.

Vanessa stood.

“Dad, don’t.”

Victor did not look at his daughter.

His lawyer placed a court order on the table.

“The company assets and all documents from the safe are now frozen pending a fraud investigation.”

Daniel read the signature.

“You filed this before tonight.”

May you like

Victor smiled.

“We’ve been preparing for the child’s return much longer than you have.”
