Chapter 2: The Name on the Record
Daniel held up the photograph.
“What does this mean, Vanessa?”
She stared at Claire.
“Ask your wife.”
Claire tightened her arms around Lily.
“Don’t you dare drag me into this.”
“You were already part of it,” Vanessa whispered.
“Long before I entered this house.”
Daniel stepped between them.
“Who was the child?”
Vanessa opened her mouth, but Marcus shouted from the hallway, “Say one word and you’ll regret it!”
A police officer pulled him back.
Vanessa’s fear turned to anger.
“You used me, Marcus!”
Claire suddenly reached for the photograph.
Daniel moved it away.
“Why do you want this?” he asked.
“I don’t.
I want Lily out of here.”
Daniel studied Claire’s face.
“You recognize my father, don’t you?”
Before she could answer, a folded hospital record slipped from behind the photograph.
Daniel picked it up.
Most of the ink had faded, but one line remained clear:
**Female infant transferred under a false surname.**
Below it was Claire’s maiden name.
“That isn’t possible,” Claire whispered.
Then Daniel’s phone lit up with a message from an unknown number.
**Your father didn’t d*e without telling someone the truth.
Don’t let Claire leave with Lily.**
Daniel slowly raised his eyes—and discovered the front door was open.
