Chapter 4: The Lie That Owned Everything

Daniel set the order down.

“You knew Claire was Samuel Reed’s daughter.”

Victor removed his gloves.

“I know Eleanor Price has spent years inventing a profitable fairy tale.”

Eleanor lifted the sealed envelope.

“Then you won’t mind this being tested.”

Victor’s lawyer reached for it.

Daniel caught his wrist.

“Don’t touch my father’s evidence.”

“Your father concealed company records,” Victor said.

“That makes him part of the fraud.”

Claire stepped forward.

“What happened to Samuel Reed?”

“A highway accident,” Victor replied.

“You were an infant.

Tragic, but irrelevant.”

“Then why erase my name?”

“I didn’t.”

Vanessa gave a bitter laugh.

“You taught us never to lie unless the paperwork could lie with us.”

Victor finally looked at her.

“Be careful.”

“No.

You be careful.”

A police officer approached Daniel.

“Sir, the court order requires us to secure the safe documents.”

Daniel handed over the folder but kept the photograph.

Victor smiled again.

“By morning, the board will remove you.

Claire’s claim will be dismissed, and Marcus will be released when they discover those transfers came from your authorization code.”

Daniel’s head turned.

“My code?”

Marcus called from the hallway, “You signed every approval, Daniel.

You just never read what your people put in front of you.”

“You forged my approval.”

“Prove it.”

The officer escorted Marcus outside.

Victor’s lawyer followed with the evidence box.

Claire caught Daniel’s sleeve.

“You cannot let them take everything.”

“If I resist a court order, Victor wins before we begin.”

“You looked at me when you said fraud.” Her voice cracked.

“Do you think I planned this?”

“I think someone has lied to me for years.”

“And you think it was me.”

Lily wrapped both arms around Claire’s waist.

“Mommy tells the truth.”

Claire dropped to her knees and pressed her face against Lily’s hair.

Daniel reached toward her.

Claire flinched.

“Don’t,” she whispered.

“Not until you decide whether I’m your wife or their suspect.”

Eleanor opened her medical bag again.

“Victor overlooked one thing.”

She removed an old videotape wrapped in cloth.

Victor’s face tightened.

“Where did you get that?”

“Daniel’s father gave it to me two weeks before he d*ed.”

“There’s nothing on it.”

“Then why are your hands shaking?”

Victor shoved them into his coat pockets.

Daniel’s security chief brought an old player from the study.

The screen flickered, showing a hospital corridor crowded with smoke.

A younger Eleanor ran past the camera carrying a bundled infant.

Then Daniel’s father appeared.

“Richard,” Claire whispered.

On the recording, Richard took the baby and faced someone outside the frame.

“You will not touch Samuel’s daughter,” he said.

Victor’s younger voice answered, “That child owns nothing unless she lives long enough to claim it.”

The picture jumped.

A woman entered view and pulled back the blanket.

Vanessa moved closer to the screen.

“That’s my mother.”

The woman kissed the infant’s forehead and looked into the camera.

“Her name is Claire,” she said.

“And Victor Hale is her father.”

Vanessa turned toward Claire, all color leaving her face.

Victor snatched the videotape from the machine and crushed the plastic beneath his shoe.

“There,” he said.

“Now prove what you heard.”
