Chapter 5: Sisters Built From Secrets

Eleanor bent over the broken tape.

“You destroyed evidence in front of police.”

Victor shrugged.

“I broke an old piece of plastic in my son-in-law’s house.”

“You are not my father-in-law,” Daniel said.

“You are leaving.”

Victor leaned close.

“By sunrise, you won’t control the house, the company, or the accounts paying your security team.”

He turned to Claire.

“And when the press learns your mother was my mistress, they will call you a thief before you ever reach a courtroom.”

Claire’s hand struck the table for support.

“Get out,” Daniel said.

Victor paused at the door.

“Ask your wife why she already knew Richard.”

The door closed behind him.

Daniel faced Claire.

“Did you?”

Claire pulled a folded letter from her pocket.

“Your father visited me six years ago, before our wedding.”

Daniel stared at the familiar handwriting.

“You kept this from me?”

“He told me my adoption might be connected to your family.

Then he begged me to forget it.”

“And you did?”

“I tried.

I loved you.

I was afraid you’d think I married you for this house.”

“You should have trusted me.”

“You just called me a suspect.”

The words landed between them.

Claire took Lily’s hand.

“Come on, sweetheart.”

Daniel blocked the doorway.

“Claire, please.”

“Please what?

Stay while you decide whether my whole life is evidence?”

Claire’s shoulders began to shake.

Lily looked up at Daniel.

“Daddy, you’re making Mommy cry.”

Daniel stepped aside as though the little girl had pushed him.

Vanessa rose slowly.

“Claire, wait.”

“Don’t come near us.”

“I know.” Vanessa removed her coat and wrapped it around Lily.

“But Victor’s men recognize your red dress.

Take this and use the kitchen exit.”

Claire stared at her.

“Why would you help me?”

“Because Lily still reached for her bear after I threw it down.

I saw what I had become.”

Vanessa removed her phone and gave it to Daniel.

“Marcus called me before dinner.

I recorded him.”

Daniel pressed play.

Marcus’s voice filled the room.

“Once Claire signs, lock her up.

Put the tracker in the bear.

If Daniel finds the safe, Dad’s lawyer will freeze everything and blame the transfers on him.”

Vanessa’s recorded voice asked, “What about Lily?”

“She’s five.

Nobody believes a five-year-old.”

Lily buried her face in Claire’s side.

Vanessa knelt several feet away.

“I believed him instead of you.

I am sorry, Lily.”

“You were mean,” Lily whispered.

“Yes.

I was.”

“Are you going to do it again?”

“No.

And I’ll tell the police exactly what I did.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“That won’t undo it.”

“I know.”

A security alarm sounded.

Daniel looked at the camera monitor.

Marcus stood inside the company records room.

“That’s impossible,” Daniel said.

“He was in police custody.”

Eleanor pointed at a man beside him.

“That is Detective Sloan—the officer who took the evidence box.”

On-screen, Sloan handed Marcus the seized documents.

Marcus fed the first page into an industrial shredder.

Then he looked directly into the camera and lifted Claire’s birth certificate.

“Come and save your wife’s inheritance, Daniel.”
