Chapter 5: The Mother Who Chose Silence

Gabriel drove to his mother Sofia’s house with Claire, Mia, Daniel, and Deputy Helen Mercer.
Sofia was waiting in the doorway with Marco’s board notice in her hand.
Gabriel held it up between them.
“Why did you sign for this?”
Sofia looked at Mia before answering.
“Bring the child inside.”
“Her name is Mia.”
“I know her name.”
Claire stopped on the threshold.
“How?”
Sofia’s fingers tightened around the doorframe.
“Luca sent me her hospital photograph three years ago.”
Gabriel stared at her.
“You knew he was alive.”
“I knew for one day.”
“You let me stand beside an empty grave.”
“Marco said he would find Luca through me if I contacted him again.”
Gabriel swept a framed family photograph from the hall table.
It struck the rug without breaking.
“You chose silence.”
“I chose Luca’s life.”
“What about Elena’s life?
Mine?
Our father’s?”
Sofia stepped closer.
“Your father confronted Marco after Elena vanished.
Marco showed him photographs of you walking to school.
You were fourteen.”
Gabriel’s voice cracked.
“So everyone protected me with lies.”
“No,” Sofia said.
“We protected Marco with our fear.”
Mia reached for the fallen photograph.
Sofia knelt and took the frame from her.
“You have Luca’s eyes.”
“Daddy says I have Mommy’s brave face.”
Sofia pressed the frame to her chest and turned away, but Claire saw her shoulders shake.
“Mrs.
Valenti,” Claire said softly, “Mia doesn’t need another person who loves her from a distance.”
Sofia faced her.
Tears ran freely down her cheeks.
“I don’t deserve to be called her grandmother.”
“Then earn it.”
Mia held out one small hand.
Sofia took it with both of hers and cried harder.
A car door slammed outside.
A young woman hurried in carrying a laptop.
Gabriel recognized Marco’s daughter, Bianca.
Daniel moved in front of Mia.
Bianca raised both hands.
“I’m not here for my father.”
“Why should we believe you?” Gabriel asked.
“Because he ordered me to erase the company backup.”
She opened the laptop and placed it on the floor.
“I copied it instead.”
Sofia stared at her niece.
“Marco will destroy you.”
“He already tried.” Bianca pulled back her sleeve, revealing finger-shaped bruises.
“He said family loyalty meant doing whatever he asked.”
Claire led her to a chair.
“Family loyalty does not leave marks.”
Bianca looked at Mia.
“I heard him say her name weeks ago.
I thought she was an account code.”
“What did you find?” Gabriel asked.
“Payments to Dr.
Everett Hale, director of a private memory-care clinic near Kenosha.
The first payment was made eighteen years ago.
The newest was made tonight.”
Deputy Mercer leaned over the screen.
“What is the clinic called?”
“North Shore Haven.”
Sofia gripped the table.
“Marco sent your father there before he d!ed.
He said the doctors needed to adjust his medication.”
Bianca opened another file.
“North Shore Haven has no licensed memory unit.
It has six private rooms registered under company numbers.”
“Ruth and Luca,” Claire said.
A video window suddenly appeared.
Marco sat behind Gabriel’s desk at Valenti Holdings.
“Bianca,” he said, “close the laptop and come home.”
She froze.
“How did you connect to this?”
“It belongs to my company.”
“It contains evidence against you.”
“It contains stolen property.”
Marco leaned toward the camera.
“Gabriel, bring me the blue phone and the original cassette.
In return, Claire’s mother walks out of North Shore Haven.”
Claire stood so quickly her chair fell.
“And Luca?”
Marco smiled.
“I only promised one person.”

The video ended.
Before anyone could speak, every file on Bianca’s laptop began disappearing.
