Chapter 1: The Woman in the Photograph

"THREE-YEAR-OLD MIA CARRIED GABRIEL VALENTI A CROOKED BIRTHDAY CAKE—THEN SHE POINTED AT THE WOMAN IN HIS HIDDEN PHOTOGRAPH AND SAID, “SHE COMES TO GRANDMA’S HOUSE”
Gabriel waited for Claire to explain why she recognized the photograph.
She couldn’t.
The woman was Elena Valenti.
Gabriel’s older sister.
Missing for eighteen years.
Declared de@d after her car was found beneath Lake Michigan.
Claire maintained she had never met Elena.
Then Mia contradicted her.
“She brings Grandma flowers.”
Claire turned pale.
Her mother lived alone outside Chicago.
Gabriel dispatched security there at once.
They discovered photographs spanning three years.
Mia with her grandmother.
Claire beside them.
And Elena standing silently in the background.
Always watching.
But one photograph was different.
Elena was holding newborn Mia.
Dated two days after Mia’s birth.
Claire swore she had been alone at the hospital.
Then Gabriel reviewed the hospital security archive.
Someone had signed in using Elena’s old Valenti family credentials.
Still active after eighteen years.
The visitor record listed her relationship to Mia as:
“AUNT.”
Gabriel stared at Claire.
“That makes no sense.”
Unless Mia was connected to the Valenti family.
Then Claire at last admitted Mia’s father had disappeared before she could tell him she was pregnant.
She showed Gabriel the sole photograph she had.
Gabriel recognized the man immediately.
His younger brother Luca.
De@d for six years.
Then Mia touched Elena’s photograph again.
“She said Daddy isn’t de@d either.”"
