Chapter 2: The Voice on the Blue Phone

Gabriel dropped to one knee beside Mia.

“When did Elena tell you that?”

“Yesterday,” Mia said.

“Daddy waved at me from Grandma’s blue phone.”

Claire gripped the table.

“My mother doesn’t own a blue phone.”

Mia reached into her little coat and pulled out a folded note.

“The flower lady said to give this to Uncle Gabriel if Grandma went away.”

Gabriel froze.

He had never told Mia he was her uncle.

“Claire, what have you hidden from me?”

“Nothing!

I didn’t even know Luca’s real surname until tonight.”

Gabriel opened the note.

Inside was the Valenti family seal and six handwritten numbers.

Before he could examine them, his security chief called.

“Mr.

Valenti, Claire’s mother is gone.

Her tea is still warm, and we found a hidden room behind the pantry.”

“What was inside?”

“Photographs of Luca, Elena, and Mia.

There was also a blue phone.”

Claire covered her mouth.

The phone in Gabriel’s hand suddenly rang.

The caller ID showed Claire’s mother’s number.

He put it on speaker.

A man whispered, “Gabe?”

Gabriel’s face lost all color.

Only Luca had ever called him that.

Then the voice said, “Don’t trust the record of my d3ath—and don’t let them take Mia.”

The line went silent as someone began pounding on Gabriel’s front door.

Who was outside—and why was Mia in danger?
