Chapter 2: The Scar He Recognized

Julian didn't fire her.

He couldn't move.

He stood in that hallway staring at the maid — really staring at her — for the first time since she'd arrived three weeks ago.

She hadn't looked up once.

Her head was bowed.

Her hands were trembling slightly as she held the boys.

"Julian." Victoria's voice came out sharp.

"I said fire her."

He didn't answer.

Because something was wrong with her hands.

On her left wrist — half hidden by her sleeve — was a small scar.

Thin.

Curved.

The kind that doesn't come from an accident.

Julian knew that scar.

He had held that wrist in a hospital hallway four years ago and wept.

"What is your name?" he asked quietly.

The maid finally looked up.

Her eyes met his — and for one second, something crossed her face.

Not fear.

Not guilt.

Recognition.

"Clara," she whispered.

Julian felt the floor shift beneath him.

Because the woman he had buried…

her name had not been Clara.

But the name on her grave had been chosen by one person.

Victoria.

He turned slowly.

His wife was already backing toward the door.

"Don't," he said.

One word.

Quiet as a closing vault.

Victoria stopped.

And from inside Julian's jacket pocket, his phone began to ring.

The screen lit up with a name he hadn't seen in four years.

A name that was supposed to be d*ad.
