Chapter 5: What She Said to Clara

Ethan took the stairs two at a time.

He came through the second-floor sitting room door to find Madison standing three feet from Clara, Noah pressed behind his mother's back, Clara's hand behind her holding the boy in place.

Madison was speaking in a voice like silk pulled tight over wire.

"You don't understand what you've gotten yourself into.

You found that photograph and you thought it made you important.

It doesn't.

It makes you a problem."

"Step back," Clara said.

Her voice was steady.

"I'm trying to help you.

Walk away from this house tonight.

Take your son.

Don't come back.

Don't speak to Ethan again.

And whatever you think you saw in that envelope — forget it."

"Or what?"

Madison tilted her head.

"Or the people I work for will start asking questions about you.

About where you came from.

About Noah's father." A pause, deliberate and precise.

"About why a woman with your history ended up working in a house like this."

Clara didn't flinch.

But her hand tightened behind her, pressing Noah closer.

"Get away from her."

Ethan's voice came from the doorway.

Madison turned.

She saw the documents in his hand.

Something moved across her face — the first genuine flash of alarm she had shown since he walked through the front door.

"Those aren't yours," she said.

"They're in my house.

In my room.

With my name on them." He held up the contract.

"A forged version of my name, to be specific.

Want to tell me how Harlan Voss got a copy of my signature on a document dated eight months before I signed anything?"

Madison said nothing.

"How long have you been working for him?"

Silence.

"Did he send you here to check whether I'd found this?

Or to take it?"

Her jaw shifted.

"You don't know what you're dealing with."

"Then explain it to me."

"Harlan Voss has been building this case against you for four years." The words came out flat, almost bored, like she was reading from a file.

"The forged contract is one piece.

There are others.

Bank transfers.

Emails.

A witness statement from someone inside your former company who will testify that you directed the fraud personally." She let that settle.

"If those documents reach the financial authority, you will be investigated.

And the investigation will be designed so that you cannot win it."

Ethan looked at her for a long moment.

"Why are you telling me this?"

"Because Harlan doesn't know I'm telling you." She glanced at Clara.

Then back at Ethan.

"And because I want something in return."

Noah shifted behind Clara.

Clara didn't move.

"What do you want?" Ethan said.

Madison reached into the inside pocket of her crimson jacket and produced a small USB drive.

She held it between two fingers.

"There's a second set of documents.

The real ones.

The originals, with the correct dates, proving you signed nothing before March.

Harlan has them locked in a server that I have access to." She set the drive on the arm of the nearest chair.

"That drive contains the access credentials.

Everything you need to pull the originals and expose the forgery."

"And in exchange?"

"I walk out of here tonight.

No police.

No record of this conversation.

You never saw me."

Ethan looked at the drive.

Then at the documents in his hand.

Then at Clara.

Clara was watching Madison with an expression Ethan had never seen on her face before.

Not anger.

Not fear.

She was waiting for something.

"How do we know what's on that drive is real?" Clara said.

Madison looked at her, mildly surprised she had spoken.

"You don't.

That's the risk."

"And how do we know Harlan doesn't already have a copy of everything on it?"

A beat of silence.

"Because," Madison said slowly, "if he did, Ethan would already be under investigation."

Clara nodded once.

Like she had just confirmed something she already suspected.

"Then you came here tonight because the window is closing," Clara said.

"Something changed.

Something made Harlan move up his timeline.

And you're trying to get out before he does."

Madison's expression went very still.

"What changed?" Clara said.

Madison picked up the USB drive and held it out toward Ethan.

"Take it," she said.

"While you still can."

Ethan reached for it.

His phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

A number he didn't recognize.

Area code he did.

He answered.

A man's voice came through the speaker.

Calm.

Almost pleasant.

"Hello, Ethan.

May you like

I think it's time we spoke directly.

My name is Harlan Voss."
