Chapter 6: Daniel Plays His Hand

Patricia Hale's office was on the fourth floor of a building downtown, small and organized, every surface clear except for the file directly in front of her.

She had read everything Rachel brought within twenty minutes.

She set the two documents side by side — the altered record and Ellen's certified copy of the original — and studied them without speaking.

Then she leaned back.

"He's exposed," she said.

"Significantly."

"What does that mean for Maya?"

"It means the falsification of a birth record is a serious matter, and his attorney knows it.

The call to your witness this morning wasn't a threat — it was fear." Patricia tapped the documents.

"He's trying to contain this before it reaches a judge."

"Can he?"

"Not if you move first." Patricia folded her hands.

"Here's what I want you to understand.

The question of Maya's legal parentage is separate from the question of custody.

You have four years of documented primary caregiving.

You have a stable home, consistent schooling, medical records, every routine appointment.

That history matters enormously to a family court judge."

"And Diane?" Rachel said.

"The biological mother.

Where does she fit?"

"Has she made any contact?"

"Not with me."

"Has Daniel mentioned her?"

"He said she signed everything willingly.

That she didn't want to raise a child."

Patricia nodded slowly.

"Then she may not be a factor.

But we need to know.

I want to find out whether she has any current legal standing or any intention to assert it." She made a note.

"What I need from you right now is a formal statement — everything you told me, in order, with dates where you have them.

And I need you to be prepared for Daniel to escalate."

"He already threatened me."

Patricia looked up.

"What did he say, exactly?"

Rachel repeated it word for word.

*If you blow this up, you need to understand what happens to Maya.

To her stability.

To the custody arrangement that is currently keeping her in this house with you.*

Patricia wrote it down.

"That's not a legal argument," she said.

"That's a man who is frightened and made a mistake out loud." She set her pen down.

"Rachel.

I want you to hear me clearly.

He falsified a legal document.

He concealed a material fact from you for the duration of your marriage.

He attempted to intimidate a witness.

Every one of those things works against him."

Rachel exhaled slowly.

"What do I do today?"

"Today you go back to your sister's.

You do not contact Daniel.

You do not respond to anything his lawyer sends without calling me first." Patricia slid a card across the desk.

"And if he contacts Maya directly, or attempts to remove her from your care, you call me immediately."

Rachel picked up the card.

"He loves her," Rachel said.

It came out before she could decide whether to say it.

"Whatever he did — he does love her."

Patricia looked at her without judgment.

"I believe you," she said.

"And that will matter later.

But right now, love is not the issue.

The issue is what he chose to do and what he chose to hide."

Rachel nodded.

She was at the elevator when her phone buzzed.

A text from Daniel.

*I spoke to my attorney.

There's something about Diane you don't know.

Something that changes everything.

Please come home so we can talk.

I'm not your enemy, Rachel.*

She stared at the message.

Then she forwarded it to Patricia and put her phone in her bag.

The elevator doors opened.

May you like

She stepped inside.

Whatever Daniel thought he knew about Diane — she was going to find out first.
