Chapter 2: The Paper She Was Never Meant to See

Her mother's hands were still shaking.

Maya was wrapped in her jacket now, pressed against her chest.

But those words wouldn't leave.

*"You think she's really yours?"*

She turned back to the woman.

"Say that again."

The woman crossed her arms slowly.

"You heard me, Rachel."

That was the first time she had used her name.

And the way she said it — like she'd been waiting years for this moment — made Rachel's stomach drop.

"You don't know anything about my daughter."

"I know more than you do." The woman tilted her head.

"Ask yourself why no one in that family ever showed you the hospital records."

Rachel went still.

Maya tugged her sleeve again.

Her small voice barely carried.

"Mommy.

She said Daddy knows."

The air left Rachel's lungs.

She looked down at Maya.

Then back at the woman.

"What does my husband have to do with this?"

The woman said nothing.

She just reached into her coat pocket and held out a folded piece of paper.

Rachel didn't move.

"Take it," the woman said quietly.

"You've been lied to for four years.

It's time you knew."

Rachel's fingers touched the edge of the paper.

And that was the moment her phone rang.

Her husband's name was on the screen.

What was written on that paper — and why was he calling at that exact moment?

The full truth is darker than anyone expected.
