Her mother didn't ask questions.
She ran.
Dropped beside the hole.
And pulled her trembling daughter into her arms.
The little girl held on to her so tightly she could barely breathe between sobs.
"Who did this?"
Maya slowly pointed over her mother's shoulder.
That was when she saw her.
The woman responsible was still standing there.
Watching.
Her mother gently placed Maya behind her and faced her.
"What is wrong with you?!"
The woman didn't back away.
Instead, she smiled coldly.
"You think she's really yours?"
The words hit harder than anything else.
For years, their family had fought over who deserved to raise Maya.
But nobody expected the four-year-old to know why.
Then Maya tugged at her mother's sleeve.
"She told someone something before you came."
Her mother turned.
"What did she say?"
Maya whispered the answer.
And suddenly, the pit was the least terrifying secret in that family.
