Chapter 4: The Voicemail from the Gate

I waited until Margaret left before I plugged in the drive.

I made coffee first.

Washed the breakfast dishes.

Checked that the kids were still asleep.

Then I sat down, put in one earbud, and pressed play.

The recording was forty-seven seconds long.

*Hannah.* His voice was low, a little rushed, the kind of voice that means someone is trying not to be overheard.

*I know you're probably resting and I don't want to wake you, but I — I just needed to hear your voice.

I'm at O'Hare.

I cut the London trip short.

Margaret called me, she said you'd been admitted and I couldn't — I couldn't just stay.*

A pause.

Gate announcement in the background, muffled.

*I'm coming home.

I'll be there in twenty minutes.

Don't sign anything my mother sends.

Don't let anyone in the room who isn't your doctor.

I'll explain everything when I get there.

I love you.

I'm coming.*

The recording ended.

I sat very still for a long time.

Then I pulled out the earbud and set it on the table.

He had come back.

He had been twenty minutes away.

And Olivia had been standing in my hospital room doorway at that exact moment, telling me he had made his choice.

---

Sophie found me at the kitchen table an hour later.

She was still in her pajamas, her hair in the two lopsided braids she always slept in because she refused to let me redo them at bedtime.

*Mommy.

Why are you crying?*

I hadn't realized I was.

*I'm okay, baby.*

She climbed into the chair beside me and leaned her head against my arm.

She didn't say anything else.

She just sat there, warm and solid and entirely certain that being next to me was the right thing to do.

Five years old and she already understood that sometimes people just needed someone to stay.

*Is it because of the man from the restaurant?* she asked after a while.

I looked down at her.

*What do you think about him?*

She considered this seriously.

*He looked scared,* she said.

*Like when Ethan broke the lamp and thought you were going to be really, really mad.*

*Scared,* I repeated.

*Yeah.* She picked up a crayon from the table and started drawing on the corner of a paper bag.

*Lucas says he's probably our dad.

Is he?*

I didn't answer immediately.

*Would that bother you?* I asked.

*No.* She kept drawing.

*But I'd want to know why he wasn't here before.*

*That's a fair thing to want to know.*

*Are you going to tell us?*

*When I understand it better myself,* I said.

*Yes.*

She nodded, satisfied with that, and went back to her drawing.

---

Sebastian called at noon.

I let it ring twice.

Then I picked up.

*Hannah.* The relief in his voice was immediate and raw.

*Thank you.

Thank you for answering.*

*I'm not ready to have the conversation you want to have,* I said.

*But I need you to answer one question.*

*Anything.*

*The night I was admitted.

Where were you?*

A long pause.

*I was at O'Hare,* he said.

*I had cut the London trip short.

Margaret called me and I — I came straight to the airport.

I called you four times from the gate.*

*And then what happened?*

His voice changed.

Quieter.

*My mother called me while I was boarding.

She told me you had lost the pregnancy.

That you were stable but that you had asked not to be contacted.

That you had already called your sister and that you specifically said you didn't want me there.*

*And you believed her.*

The silence that followed was the longest of the call.

*I was on a plane,* he said finally.

*By the time I landed, Olivia was at baggage claim.

She had a car.

She said my mother had sent her.

She said you had already been discharged and that you had left the city.*

*I had not been discharged,* I said.

*I was in that hospital for eleven more days.*

He didn't say anything.

*Sebastian.* My voice was steady.

I had practiced being steady for five years.

*I have a document your mother brought to my room while I was still recovering.

I have the voicemail you left me from the gate.

And I have a recording of Olivia telling me you had made your choice — while you were twenty minutes away in a car.*

A sharp intake of breath.

*I also have,* I continued, *the name of the foundation your mother established six weeks before our wedding.

The one that inherits the Carter estate if you die without a recognized heir.*

The silence on his end was absolute.

*Hannah,* he said.

His voice had gone somewhere I hadn't heard it go before.

*What did my mother do?*

*I think,* I said carefully, *that's a conversation you need to have with her.

Not with me.*

*I want to see the children.*

*I know you do.*

*Please.*

*Not yet,* I said.

*There are things that need to happen first.*

*What things?*

*You need to talk to your mother,* I said.

*And then you need to decide what you're going to do about it.

After that, we'll talk.*

I ended the call before he could respond.

My hands were shaking slightly.

I pressed them flat on the table until they stopped.

From the living room, I could hear all three of them now — Ethan narrating some elaborate game, Lucas disagreeing loudly, Sophie refereeing with the calm authority of someone who had been managing those two since before she could walk.

I listened to them for a moment.

Then my phone buzzed.

Not Sebastian this time.

Olivia.

*I know Margaret went to see you.

Whatever she told you, she's a bitter old woman who has hated Eleanor for decades.

Don't let her use you to settle a family grudge.*

*Meet me today.

Just the two of us.

I can explain everything.*

I read it twice.

May you like

Then I typed back four words.

*Send me a location.*
