Chapter 2: The Recording She Thought No One Would Ever Hear

I put the kids to bed early that night.

Then I sat at the kitchen table and opened the audio file.

Five years, two months, and eleven days old.

Olivia's voice came through the speaker first.

*He's not coming, Hannah.

He made his choice.

Stop calling.*

Then Sebastian's voice — distant, confused — asking who she was talking to.

*No one,* Olivia said.

*Wrong number.*

I had listened to that recording hundreds of times.

But tonight felt different.

Because tonight, Sebastian had seen their faces.

My phone rang at 11:04 p.m.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

Then a woman spoke — older, careful, choosing every word.

*Hannah.

This is Margaret Carter.

Sebastian's aunt.*

I went very still.

*I know what Eleanor told him.

I was there the night she made the call to Olivia.

I heard everything.*

My hand tightened around the phone.

*I kept quiet because I was afraid of what Eleanor would do to me.

But those are my brother's grandchildren sitting in that apartment tonight.*

She paused.

*I have something you need to see.

A document Eleanor had drawn up before you even left the hospital.

If Sebastian ever finds out what his mother actually arranged...*

Her voice dropped.

*...it won't just end his engagement.*

*It will end her.*

The line went silent.

Then she said one final thing I wasn't prepared for.

What Margaret revealed next — and what was inside that document — exposed a betrayal far deeper than Hannah ever imagined.
