Chapter 1: The Night He Thought He'd Won

"My ex-husband pointed at me in the middle of his company gala and told security, 'Get her out.
She doesn't belong here anymore.'"
And for a moment, it looked like he had won.
Two guards grabbed my arms while hundreds of guests turned to stare beneath the lights.
Marcus stood there in his tuxedo beside the woman he left me for, savoring every second of my humiliation.
"This is embarrassing, Rebecca," he said.
"You should have stayed gone."
Six months earlier, he ended our marriage by email while I was away caring for my dying aunt.
After that, he told everyone I had lived off his success.
I never corrected him.
I let him talk.
I let people believe him.
And I let silence do what arguments never could.
So when security started leading me out, I didn't fight.
I didn't cry.
I didn't beg.
Then the ballroom doors opened.
Chairman Harrison Cole walked in, took one look at the guards holding my arms, and his entire expression changed.
"What is happening?"
Marcus smirked and called me his ex-wife who had crashed the gala.
Then the chairman said seven words that shattered the room:
"Release her immediately.
She's my successor."
The guards let go.
The crowd gasped.
And Marcus went pale.
But the truth was…
that announcement still wasn't the biggest shock waiting for him.
