Chapter 3: What the Photographs Proved

Marcus set the phone face-down on the kitchen counter.

He didn't answer it.

He looked at Vanessa for a long moment — really looked at her — and something in his expression made her take one step back.

"How long?" he said.

"Marcus—"

"How long have you known Daniel Holt?"

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

She bent down, picked up the broken glass, and set the pieces carefully in the sink.

Her hands were steady now.

That steadiness was worse than panic.

"You're making something out of nothing."

"His name is on legal documents transferring custody of my daughter to him.

That is not nothing."

"Those papers aren't finalized."

"So they're real."

She didn't answer.

Elijah hadn't moved from the doorway.

He still had Zoe's hand.

Zoe was watching her mother with the blank, careful expression of a child who had learned not to react.

Marcus walked to the table and opened the thick envelope again.

He pulled out the photographs.

There were eleven of them.

Vanessa and a man Marcus didn't recognize — tall, mid-forties, dark jacket — outside a restaurant.

In a parking garage.

Sitting across from each other at what looked like a lawyer's office.

In one photograph, the man had his hand on Zoe's shoulder.

Zoe was maybe two years old in that picture.

Marcus held it up.

"This was taken two years ago."

Vanessa looked at the photograph and said nothing.

"Zoe was two.

You've been meeting with this man since Zoe was two years old."

"You don't understand the situation."

"Then explain it to me."

"I can't."

"You can't, or you won't?"

She turned toward the window.

Her voice dropped.

"There are things about Zoe that you don't know."

The room went very quiet.

Elijah's grip on his sister's hand tightened.

Zoe looked up at her brother.

She still didn't understand, but she felt the shift in the room the way children always do — in the air, in the silence, in the way the adults had stopped moving.

"What things?" Marcus said.

Vanessa turned back around.

And for the first time since he'd come home, she looked genuinely afraid.

Not of him.

Of something else.

Something behind the answer she was about to give.

"Daniel Holt is Zoe's biological father."

Marcus didn't move.

"You were in Chicago for eight months," she said.

"The project.

You remember."

He remembered.

"We had problems before you left.

You know we did."

"So you—"

"I made a mistake.

I ended it.

I didn't know I was pregnant until after you came back." She pressed her lips together.

"I thought Zoe was yours.

I believed that.

For two years, I believed it."

"And then?"

"And then Daniel found out.

He had a test done.

He has proof."

Marcus put the photograph down on the table very slowly.

"He threatened you."

Vanessa's silence was its own answer.

"He said if I didn't cooperate with the custody transfer, he would go to court and take her anyway.

He said he'd make everything public.

He said—" Her voice cracked for the first time.

"He said he'd make sure you found out in the worst possible way."

Marcus looked at his daughter.

Zoe had rested her head against Elijah's arm.

"So your solution," Marcus said quietly, "was to hand her over."

"My solution was to protect her."

"From what?"

"From a custody war she'd spend her entire childhood in the middle of."

"She's four years old, Vanessa.

She doesn't know any of this.

She knows this house.

She knows Elijah.

She knows me." His voice didn't rise.

It dropped.

"And you were going to take her away from all of it without telling me she existed in the first place."

Vanessa opened her mouth.

The second cellphone buzzed again on the counter.

Both of them looked at it.

I need an answer tonight."*
