Chapter 1: The Key Hidden in a Child's Bear

Marcus almost believed his wife.
That was the part Elijah feared most.
When Marcus came home early, Vanessa immediately claimed his eight-year-old son had become violent.
"Thank God you're here.
Elijah att@cked me."
Marcus looked at his son.
Elijah was trembling.
But he wasn't standing near Vanessa.
He was standing in front of his four-year-old sister.
Protecting her.
"Dad...
don't believe her."
Then Zoe's stuffed bear fell.
A tiny silver key slipped from a hidden pocket.
Vanessa moved faster than anyone.
"Give me that!"
Marcus picked it up first.
Three words were engraved on its tag:
MASTER BEDROOM — 2ND SAFE.
Marcus stared at his wife.
They had one safe.
It was inside his home office.
"We don't have a second safe."
Elijah answered before Vanessa could.
"She does."
Weeks earlier, the children had seen Vanessa unlock something behind a panel inside the master-bedroom closet.
She warned them never to tell their father.
Marcus went upstairs.
Behind several hanging coats was a narrow wall panel.
The key fit.
But what Marcus discovered inside wasn't cash.
There were passports.
Financial records.
Photographs.
And a second cellphone.
Then Marcus found a thick envelope containing paperwork for Zoe.
He read the first page twice.
His hands started shaking.
Because someone had been preparing to change his daughter's legal guardianship.
And the person listed to receive custody wasn't Vanessa.
It was a man Marcus had never heard of.
