Chapter 2: The Name That Dropped a Glass

Marcus stood in that closet for a long moment, the envelope shaking in his hands.

He turned to the second cellphone.

It wasn't locked.

The last message on the screen stopped him cold.

*"Everything is ready.

Once the papers go through, bring her to me.

Don't let him find out."*

The contact name was saved as one word.

*Daddy.*

Marcus walked back downstairs slowly.

Vanessa was in the kitchen, pretending to pour water.

She didn't look up.

"Who is Daniel Holt?"

The glass slipped from her hand.

"Where did you hear that name?"

"His name is on the custody papers.

For Zoe."

Vanessa's expression shifted — not into guilt.

Into something colder.

"You were never supposed to find that."

Elijah appeared in the doorway, holding Zoe's hand.

The little girl had no idea what was happening.

But Elijah did.

"Dad," he said quietly.

"She made phone calls.

Late at night.

I heard her say Zoe's name."

Vanessa turned on him fast.

"You don't know what you're talking about."

"I wrote down the dates," Elijah said.

"I kept a list."

Marcus looked at his son — this eight-year-old boy who had been silently protecting his sister for weeks — and felt something break open inside his chest.

Then the second cellphone lit up.

A new message from *Daddy.*

*"Is it done?"*
