Chapter 5: The Calm Before He Lands

"I have to go," Brittany said.

The call ended.

Samantha sat with the phone in her hand and the silence of her apartment around her.

She didn't know what Brittany would do.

She didn't know whether the woman would say anything to Christian, warn him, pretend the call had never happened.

What she did know was that the conversation had confirmed everything her lawyer needed to hear.

She called Gloria.

"The other woman contacted me directly," Samantha said.

"She didn't know the apartment was mine.

He told her it was an investment property he owned outright.

He told her the sale was already arranged and that I would sign whatever he put in front of me."

Gloria was quiet for exactly two seconds.

"Did she say anything about the secondary account?"

"She knew about it.

She called it savings.

He told her it was under a different name for tax reasons."

"That's not savings," Gloria said.

"That's a concealed asset.

Samantha, if he's been hiding that account during a marriage, it becomes relevant to the divorce proceedings regardless of whether the apartment sale goes through."

"I want to move forward," Samantha said.

"Whatever the next step is, I want to take it."

"Then here's what happens now," Gloria said.

"I file the protective notice on the title today — that's already done.

Tomorrow morning I file the initial divorce petition.

We document everything: the listing, the title search, the account transfers, the conversation you just had with Brittany.

We build the record before he walks back through the door."

"He lands Sunday," Samantha said.

"Then we have two days.

That's enough."

After she hung up, Samantha called Rachel.

"Gloria is filing tomorrow," she said.

Rachel exhaled.

"Good.

How are you feeling?"

"Strange," Samantha said honestly.

"Not the way I expected to feel."

"What did you expect?"

"I don't know.

More of a collapse, maybe." She looked around the apartment.

The kitchen she had renovated three years ago.

The bookshelves she had built herself on a Saturday afternoon while Christian watched football in the other room.

"I just feel very clear."

"That's not strange," Rachel said.

"That's what happens when you stop waiting for the ground to fall out from under you and realize you're already standing."

Samantha almost smiled.

The next morning she went to work.

She sat at her desk, opened her spreadsheets, answered her emails, and did her job with the same focus she brought to everything.

Her colleagues noticed nothing different.

That was deliberate.

At noon, Gloria sent a confirmation.

The divorce petition had been filed.

The protective notice was on the title.

The account transfers had been formally documented and submitted to the court as part of the financial disclosure record.

At 2 p.m., Christian called.

"Hey," he said.

"Just checking in.

Flight's confirmed for Sunday morning.

I should be home by early afternoon."

"Good," Samantha said.

"I'll make sure I'm here."

"I was thinking we could go through those apartment documents together when I get back.

Get the ball rolling."

"Absolutely," she said.

"I've actually been gathering some paperwork myself.

I want to make sure we have everything in order."

"That's my girl," he said.

"Always on top of things."

She kept her voice light.

"Always."

After she hung up, she sat still for a moment.

*That's my girl.*

Twelve years of that.

Twelve years of being managed and reassured and quietly underestimated.

He had looked at her and seen someone who would sign whatever he put in front of her without asking questions.

Someone who trusted too easily.

Someone who would never look.

He had been wrong about all of it.

Her phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number — different from Brittany's.

She opened it.

A photo.

Christian and Brittany at dinner, taken from across the restaurant.

The same photos she had already seen.

Then a second message from the same number.

*There's more.

May you like

Things she doesn't even know yet.

Call me.*
