Chapter 2: The Second Account

Brenda pulled up one more screen.

"There's something else," she said quietly.

"Someone ran a title search on your apartment three weeks ago.

Before Christian even left for the trip."

Samantha stared at the date.

Three weeks ago, she had been sitting across from Christian at dinner.

He had poured her wine and asked about her day.

"He planned this before he left," Samantha said.

"It looks that way."

That afternoon, Samantha called her lawyer without telling a single person except Rachel.

Then she did something that surprised even herself.

She called Christian.

"How's everything going?" she asked, her voice calm.

"Slow.

You know how these things are." He sounded relaxed.

Comfortable.

"When you get back," she said, "let's sit down and talk about the apartment.

I've been thinking about what you said.

Maybe you're right."

There was a short pause.

"Really?" His voice shifted — just slightly.

Warmer.

More eager.

"Really," she said.

"We should sort out the paperwork properly."

"I'll take care of everything when I'm back.

Don't worry about a thing."

She hung up and looked at Rachel.

"He thinks I don't know."

Rachel shook her head slowly.

"Sam…

why is he in such a hurry to sell?

What does he need that money for?"

Samantha had been asking herself the same question.

Then Brenda called back.

"I found something.

Christian has a second account.

And there have been large transfers going out every month for the past year."

The room went very still.

"To whose account?" Samantha asked.

Brenda hesitated.

"That's the part you need to see for yourself."

What Samantha found in that account changed everything she thought she knew about her marriage.
