Chapter 1: The White Shirt by the Pool

"I'm not coming back today.
The negotiations got complicated, and I'll probably have to stay another 4 or 5 days."
At 4 p.m.
on Friday, Samantha knew her husband was lying before she even understood why.
She was 46 years old, worked as a financial administrator in Atlanta, and had been married to Christian Cardenas for 12 years.
He was supposedly in Detroit closing an important contract for the logistics company where he worked.
"But your flight was at 6," she reminded him.
"I canceled it.
Everything got completely messed up here."
A woman's laughter could be heard in the background.
"Are you at the office?"
There was a pause.
"There are a lot of people here at the hotel's business center.
I'll call you later."
He hung up far too quickly.
Samantha tried to convince herself that it meant nothing.
Christian traveled constantly.
Flights got delayed.
Meetings ran late.
Business dinners came up unexpectedly.
Two hours later, her friend Rachel invited her out for coffee.
While they were talking, Rachel started showing her some photos that an acquaintance had just sent from a hotel in Miami.
"Look, this is Brittany.
She's showing off her new boyfriend.
Well…
her lover.
The man is still married, but he says he's going to leave his wife."
"The same old story," Samantha replied.
Rachel swiped to the next photo.
Samantha stopped breathing.
Standing beside a pool was Christian.
He was wearing the white shirt she had packed into his suitcase herself and the watch Samantha had given him for his birthday.
A younger woman, probably around 30, had one hand resting on his chest while he held her around the waist.
"Rachel…
zoom in."
Her friend went pale.
"It can't be."
"It's Christian."
In the other pictures, he was having dinner with the same woman, walking into the hotel with her, and kissing her forehead by the ocean.
Then Samantha's phone rang.
Christian.
She answered.
"Are you still working?"
"I just left the office.
I'm exhausted.
I have a meeting first thing tomorrow."
Samantha looked at the photograph of her husband standing beside the pool.
"Poor thing.
You haven't even had a chance to rest."
"Not at all.
I came here to work, not to go on vacation."
The ease with which he lied hurt more than the photograph itself.
Rachel wanted to immediately find out who the woman was.
"No," Samantha stopped her.
"If we start asking too many questions, he'll find out.
First, I want to understand what he's doing."
They went through the acquaintance's old messages.
The woman's name was Brittany.
She had been seeing a married man for months.
He kept promising that he would leave his wife in the fall.
There was another strange sentence.
"After the trip, he'll take care of the house situation, and then we can live together."
Samantha frowned.
Christian didn't own a house.
The apartment they lived in belonged exclusively to her.
She had purchased it years before she ever met him.
That night, when she returned home alone, Samantha recalled something that had seemed completely innocent at the time.
A week earlier, Christian had asked her for photographs and copies of the apartment documents.
"A friend knows about mortgage loans," he had told her.
"I want to calculate how much we could get if we sell this place and buy a house."
Samantha had sent him everything.
At 11:30 that night, she called her cousin Brenda, a real estate agent.
"I need you to check something tomorrow.
I want to know if Christian is trying to do something with my apartment."
The next morning, Brenda met her with a tense expression.
She turned the computer toward Samantha.
Her apartment was listed in a private database used by real estate agents.
Photos of the living room.
The kitchen.
The bedrooms.
And a listing that read:
"Coming soon to market.
Quick sale.
Owner has agreed.
Documentation available upon return."
The asking price was far below its actual value.
Samantha searched the contact name.
Christian Cardenas.
"He's not the owner," she said, her voice trembling.
"I know," Brenda replied.
"But he's already looking for a buyer.
He says you'll sign the papers when he gets back."
Samantha felt the infidelity turn into something far worse.
Her husband wasn't just on vacation with another woman.
He was also trying to sell the home that had never belonged to him.
And he was convinced that after 12 years of manipulating her trust, Samantha would sign whatever he put in front of her without asking questions.
What she discovered a few hours later made everything seem even more sinister — and it was impossible to believe what was about to happen.
---
What is Christian really planning to do the moment he walks back through that door?
