Chapter 6: What He Did When He Knew

Ryan found us at the nurses' station.

He stopped in the corridor when he saw my mother.

His face did something careful and controlled — a small recalibration, like a man stepping onto ice and checking his weight.

"Carol," he said.

Warm.

Surprised.

"I didn't know you were coming."

"No," my mother said.

"You didn't."

He looked at me.

At the baby.

At the folder tucked under my arm.

"What's going on?"

"We need to talk," I said.

"Not here.

The family room at the end of the hall."

"I just came from the discharge office.

They have paperwork ready — we can go home this afternoon—"

"Ryan." My voice didn't shake.

"Family room.

Now."

---

He sat across from me at the small table.

My mother stood by the door.

She didn't close it all the way.

I put the folder on the table between us.

He looked at it.

He didn't touch it.

"What is that?"

"Eleven forty-seven PM," I said.

"The night I was unconscious.

You went to the NICU desk."

Nothing moved in his face.

"You told the attending nurse that we had decided — together — not to pursue further intervention for our son."

"That's not—"

"I was unconscious, Ryan."

"I know you were.

I was trying to protect you from—"

"From what?" My voice came out harder than I planned.

"From your decision?

From the choice you made alone, without me, while I was lying in a bed three floors up?"

He leaned forward.

"His prognosis was poor.

The doctor had already told me—"

"Dr.

Ellison says he was never consulted that night.

The attending nurse acted on what you told her.

Alone."

"That nurse misunderstood—"

"There's footage." I opened the folder.

Slid the timestamp log toward him.

"Of you at the desk.

Of you nodding.

Of you walking away." I paused.

"Of the staff not entering that room for fourteen minutes after you left."

He looked at the paper.

His jaw worked.

"I was trying to protect you," he said again.

Quieter this time.

"Stop saying that."

"It's the truth.

His chances were—"

"He was my son." My voice broke on the last word and I let it.

"He was my son and I never got to decide.

You took that from me.

You stood at that desk and you took it."

Ryan's hands went flat on the table.

"You don't understand what those three days were like," he said.

"You were unconscious.

I was alone.

I was terrified.

I made a decision in the worst moment of my life and I have to live with that."

"So do I," I said.

"Except I didn't get to make it."

---

He tried a different angle then.

I watched him find it.

"Carol." He turned to my mother.

"You know me.

Six years.

You know I love your daughter."

My mother looked at him for a long moment.

"I know you answered my calls for three days and told me she was resting," she said.

"I know you didn't once put her on the phone."

His mouth closed.

"I know my daughter has a folder full of timestamps and I know there is a hospital investigation already open." She didn't raise her voice.

"And I know my brother David is on his way here right now."

Something shifted in Ryan's face.

The warmth drained out of it.

"You called an attorney."

"She called her mother," my mother said.

"I called an attorney."

Ryan stood up.

"This is not what it looks like.

I am not going to sit here and be treated like a criminal by my own family."

"Then sit down and tell the truth," I said.

"All of it.

Right now."

He looked at me.

At the folder.

At my mother by the door.

"I want to speak to a lawyer," he said.

"That's your right," I said.

"But you should know — Denise Carver has already given her statement to hospital administration.

The investigation is not waiting for you."

He said nothing.

"Sit down, Ryan."

He didn't sit down.

He walked to the door.

My mother stepped aside.

He stopped with his hand on the frame.

"I loved that baby," he said.

Without turning around.

"Whatever you think — I loved him."

I looked at the folder on the table.

"Then you should have fought for him," I said.

He left.

The door swung slowly back to almost-closed.

My mother came and sat beside me.

May you like

She put her hand over mine.

Neither of us said anything for a while.
