Chapter 1: The Man Who Never Left My Side

For Three Days He Never Left My Bedside, Brought Flowers, Helped Me Sit Up, And Everyone Called Him The Perfect Grieving Husband And Father—Until That NICU Nurse Fixed My Son's Blanket And Told Me Not To React, To Keep Smiling, Because The Video She'd Secretly Sent Would Prove Ryan Hadn't Been Mourning Our D\*ad Twin At All; He'd Been Covering Up What He Did To Him.
I was thirty-eight weeks pregnant with twin boys when my entire world fell apart.
My pregnancy had gone smoothly.
Then, one afternoon, a sharp, unbearable pain ripped through my abdomen and sent me collapsing to my knees.
Minutes later, I was inside an ambulance.
The next thing I remembered was opening my eyes in a hospital room three days afterward.
Every inch of my body ached.
Even taking a breath felt exhausting.
My husband, Ryan, sat beside the bed, clutching my hand.
As soon as he noticed my eyes were open, he started sobbing.
"I'm so sorry," he whispered.
"They weren't able to save one of the babies."
I stared blankly at him.
"What...?"
His fingers tightened around mine.
"They tried everything they could.
We need to focus on the son we still have."
Then he pressed his face against my shoulder.
And I wept with him.
I truly believed we were grieving together.
During the next two days, Ryan barely left the hospital.
He brought flowers.
He helped me sit upright.
Everyone kept telling me what a wonderful husband and father he was.
I trusted them.
Then, on the morning the NICU finally approved our baby to stay in my room, a nurse wheeled him inside.
She smiled warmly at Ryan.
"Congratulations," she said.
Then she bent over my son and carefully fixed his blanket.
Without meeting my eyes, she murmured quietly,
"Don't react."
"Keep smiling."
"I sent something to your phone."
My heart missed a beat.
She gently lowered my son into my arms.
Then she moved even closer.
"Watch it once your husband leaves."
Her voice became almost inaudible.
"You have no idea WHAT HE ACTUALLY DID TO YOUR OTHER BABY."
Thirty minutes later, Ryan kissed my forehead and walked out to buy coffee.
The instant the door shut, I reached for my phone.
There was a single new video.
It lasted only twenty-seven seconds.
I tapped play.
Five seconds later...
my phone slipped from my fingers and landed on the bed.
"No..." I whispered.
"Oh my God..."
I turned toward the door, suddenly realizing that the man I had been grieving beside...
had been LYING to me since the second I woke up.
