Chapter 2: Twenty-Seven Seconds

My hands wouldn't stop shaking.

I picked the phone back up.

Watched it again.

Twenty-seven seconds.

That was all it took to destroy everything I thought I knew about my husband.

The video was from a hospital corridor camera.

The timestamp read three days earlier — the night I was unconscious.

Ryan was there.

Standing outside the NICU.

He wasn't crying.

He wasn't praying.

He was on his phone, calm and quiet, and then a nurse approached him and said something.

He nodded.

And then he walked away.

He just...

walked away.

I pressed my fist against my mouth to keep from making a sound.

Because in the next frame, two staff members rushed into the NICU.

And they didn't come back out with good news.

I was still staring at the screen when the door opened.

Ryan stepped back in, two coffees in hand, smiling softly.

"You look pale," he said.

"Are you feeling okay?"

I looked up at him.

"I'm fine," I heard myself say.

"Just tired."

He sat down.

Reached for my hand again.

And I let him take it.

Because I needed him to believe I didn't know.

Not yet.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

Four words.

*"He made the call."*

---

What call?

And who sent that message?

What really happened inside that NICU the night I was unconscious?
