Chapter 1: The Bag by the Door

19-year-old Jasmine was standing near the open front door, holding a bag full of clothes.

Her stepmother, Jessica, stood in front of her angrily.

"Give me the rent or get out of this house!"

Jasmine looked at her in disbelief.

"But I am your daughter!

This is my house too!"

Jessica looked at her coldly.

"You are not my daughter!"

Just then, Jasmine's dad, David, came downstairs, looking sleepy.

"What is going on?

Where are you going?"

Jasmine turned toward him with tears in her eyes.

"She is kicking me out because I won't pay her rent in my own house!"

David looked confused.

"Rent?

What rent?"

Jessica answered confidently.

"I demand $2,000 from her to live in this house!"

David looked shocked.

"But why?"

Jessica crossed her arms.

"I am teaching her to live through difficult times."

"And my son needs $2,000 to buy a new phone this winter!"

David stared at her in disbelief.

"You are demanding $2,000 from my daughter to buy your son a new phone?"

"That's not teaching her responsibility!"

"She is not paying a single penny to live in her own home!"

Jessica tried to respond.

"David, I—"

"Enough!"

David pointed toward the hallway.

"If this ever happens again, you and your son will be the ones paying rent.

Understand?"

Jessica lowered her head in embarrassment.

"Yes."

David walked over to Jasmine and placed his hand on her shoulder.

"Don't worry, sweetheart.

Nobody is kicking you out of your own home."

Jasmine wiped away her tears as her father stood protectively beside her.

Jessica had tried to force Jasmine out just to get money for her son's phone, but one question from David exposed everything and changed the situation completely.

David shut Jessica down fast — but do you think she will let this go?
