Chapter 7: The Room Where She Lost Everything

Claire lifted the coffee cup from beside Marcus’s chair.

“Vivienne brought this to him at breakfast.”

Owen sealed the cup in an evidence bag.

“No one touches it again.”

Vivienne moved toward the door.

“I’m calling my attorney.”

“You should,” Elena said from the tablet.

“The judge has ordered you to appear.”

Two hours later, Marcus entered the courthouse conference room with Daniel pushing his chair.

Claire carried the blue box, while Grant walked beside Owen with the recorder.

Adrian Vale stood near the windows.

“You brought the housekeeper?” he asked.

Claire placed the torn document on the table.

“The housekeeper found what your chief executive missed.”

Adrian looked at Vivienne.

“You said the evidence was gone.”

Vivienne’s mouth tightened.

“It was.”

Marcus wheeled to the head of the table.

“Was?”

Adrian raised both hands.

“This was Vivienne’s plan.

She told me you wanted a private transition.”

“You signed the board request,” Marcus said.

“To protect the company.”

Grant set down the bank records.

“Did the company need protection from these transfers too?”

Adrian’s face changed.

Judge Eleanor Walsh entered with a court clerk and two investigators.

Everyone stood except Marcus.

“Remain seated, Mr.

Hartwell,” she said.

“This is an emergency review, not a trial.

I want direct answers.”

Elena played the recording.

Vivienne listened to her own voice say, “His legs can recover after the wedding.”

When it ended, she pointed at Grant.

“He edited it.”

Grant slid the original device toward the clerk.

“Then test it.”

Judge Walsh examined the pharmacy logs.

“Ms.

Shaw, did you obtain medication through Simon Reed?”

“My attorney advised me not to answer.”

“You filed a sworn petition describing Mr.

Reed as a licensed physician.”

Adrian stepped away from her.

“I didn’t know Reed was unlicensed.”

Vivienne laughed bitterly.

“You introduced us.”

He looked toward the investigators.

“She’s lying.”

Marcus placed the forged transfer document beside the bank records.

“Which of you copied my signature?”

Neither answered.

Elena turned the prepaid phone toward the judge.

“The metadata shows Adrian sent the signature file to Vivienne.

Her printer produced the transfer and guardianship documents.”

Judge Walsh looked at Marcus.

“Do you understand why this hearing was requested?”

“Yes.”

“What do you want the court to do?”

“Restore my authority, preserve the company records, and protect every witness they threatened.”

Vivienne leaned across the table.

“Withdraw that request, Marcus.”

“Why would I?”

“Because if Adrian falls, your company falls with him.

Investors will run.

Thousands of employees could lose everything.”

Marcus held her gaze.

“Then I’ll tell them the truth before you sell them another lie.”

She lowered her voice.

“I can still contain this.

Give me the shares, and Claire walks away.”

Claire stepped beside Marcus.

“I’m not asking him to surrender.”

Vivienne looked at Lily’s stuffed rabbit tucked inside Claire’s bag.

“You should think about your daughter.”

Marcus rolled forward until only the table separated them.

“Speak about Lily again, and every person in this room will hear exactly what you are.”

Judge Walsh closed the file.

“The temporary guardianship order is vacated.

Mr.

Hartwell’s voting and executive rights are restored immediately.

Ms.

Shaw and Mr.

Vale are prohibited from accessing Hartwell Dynamics accounts, systems, or property.”

The investigators moved first.

Adrian pointed at Vivienne.

“She planned the forged documents.”

Vivienne turned on him.

“And you moved twenty-eight million dollars.”

An investigator placed separate evidence notices before them.

Marcus watched Vivienne remove his engagement ring from her finger.

“You were nothing in that chair until I kept your life together,” she said.

Marcus took the ring but did not close his hand around it.

“No.

I was wounded.

You needed me to believe that meant worthless.”

She was escorted through the door still staring at him.

Daniel bent beside Marcus.

“We should return to the hospital.”

Marcus looked down at his right foot.

His shoe had shifted.

“Daniel.”

“What is it?”

“Put your hand under my heel.”

Daniel obeyed.

Marcus gripped the chair and pushed with everything he had left.

His right foot moved against Daniel’s palm.

Claire covered her mouth.

Grant looked away to hide his tears.

Daniel’s voice broke into a laugh.

“Do it again.”

May you like

Marcus pressed down once more.

This time, everyone saw it.
