Chapter 2: The Signature He Never Wrote

“Don’t,” his fiancée said sharply.
Marcus tightened his grip on the parallel bars.
“Don’t what?
Try?”
“The doctor warned you not to push yourself.”
“No.
You warned me.”
Her face changed.
“I was protecting you.”
“Then why are you frightened?”
Before she could answer, the doorbell rang.
Minutes later, Marcus’s physical therapist entered carrying a thick folder.
“You asked for the complete report,” he said.
“Including the progress notes I was told to remove.”
Marcus looked up.
“Told by whom?”
His fiancée stepped forward.
“This is ridiculous.
Marcus needs rest.”
The therapist opened the folder.
“Three months ago, he moved both feet during treatment.
I recommended daily sessions.”
Marcus felt the room tilt.
“You told me there had been no improvement.”
“I told you what the doctors told me,” she snapped.
“No,” the therapist said.
“The doctors never said that.”
Claire appeared in the doorway, holding a torn envelope.
“I found this in the kitchen bin,” she whispered.
“Lily saw her hiding it.”
Marcus unfolded the document.
It transferred control of Hartwell Dynamics to his fiancée immediately after their wedding—if he was declared permanently unable to manage his affairs.
Then he saw his signature at the bottom.
A signature he had never written.
His fiancée reached for the paper.
“Marcus, you don’t understand.”
Behind her, Lily’s small voice came from the hall.
“She said there was one more paper.”
Everyone froze.
Marcus turned toward her.
“What paper, Lily?”
