Chapter 8: Everything She Built

Rachel was arrested on a Tuesday.

Elena was at work — a new job, three months in, the kind of office where people brought coffee for each other and nobody checked the clock — when David called.

She stepped into the hallway.

"They executed the warrant this morning," he said.

"Her apartment, her laptop, her storage unit."

"The storage unit?"

"Carl said there was a filing cabinet.

Organized by name." A pause.

"Elena, we weren't the first."

She put her hand flat against the wall.

"How many?"

"At least four other cases.

Different cities.

Different men.

The pattern was the same each time — she identified someone going through a separation, inserted herself, then worked to isolate them from their former partner." His voice was steady but she could hear the effort it took.

"Two of those women lost custody arrangements.

One lost her home."

"David."

"She had files on all of them.

Photographs.

Fabricated documents.

Records of what she'd sent and where." He paused.

"Carl thinks she kept them as insurance.

In case any of them ever pushed back."

Elena leaned against the wall and looked at the ceiling for a moment.

"Is she being charged?"

"Fraud.

Defamation.

Witness tampering — for the phone call.

And in two of the other cases, the women have already been contacted and both of them want to pursue charges." Another pause.

"Carl says the storage unit alone is going to keep prosecutors busy for months."

Elena closed her eyes.

She thought about the dark room.

The sound of the lock.

Sophie's voice through the door — *Mommy is inside this dark room* — and the way two hours of silence in that space had felt, how long and airless and frightening.

She thought about the year before that.

The phone calls from her employer.

The termination letter.

The single room at her sister's house.

Sophie's drawings taped to the wall above the air mattress because there was no proper bed.

"Elena," David said.

"Are you still there?"

"Yes," she said.

"I'm here."

"Margaret wants to know if you and Sophie want to come for dinner on Sunday.

She's been asking every week."

Elena almost laughed.

It came out as something close to one.

"Tell her yes," she said.

"Tell her we'll be there."

She went back into the office.

Her colleague looked up from her desk.

"Everything okay?"

"Yes," Elena said.

And she meant it in a way she hadn't meant it in a long time.

She sat down.

She opened her work.

Outside the window, the city went about its Tuesday, indifferent and ordinary and exactly right.
