Chapter 2: Ask Her Who I Am

Elena stumbled out of that dark room, blinking against the light, her daughter clinging to her arms.

David stepped between them, his voice low and shaking.

"How long were you in there?"

"Since before the ceremony," Elena whispered.

"She told me if I made a sound, she would take my daughter away."

The room went completely still.

The bride backed toward the door, her bouquet still in her hands, her smile gone.

"She is unstable, David.

You know what she is like.

She does this for attention."

But David wasn't looking at her anymore.

He was looking at his daughter, who had climbed into Elena's arms and buried her face in her neck.

Then an older woman near the back of the room spoke up.

"I saw her lock that door.

Two hours ago.

I thought it was a storage room."

The bride spun around.

"You stay out of this."

"I have a photo," the woman said quietly, holding up her phone.

"I took it because something felt wrong."

The bride's face changed.

Not into anger.

Into something colder.

She looked at David one last time and said four words no one in that room expected.

"Ask her who I am."
