Chapter 6: The Child Who Saved the Truth

Nobody moved while the recording continued.
Victoria’s voice came through next.
“And Sophie becomes the heir?”
“She becomes useful,” Matteo replied on the tablet.
“Do not confuse the two.”
Sophie’s face crumpled.
“He said I would be family.”
Margaret pulled her close.
“You are not a tool for anyone.”
Raffaele held out his hand.
“May I take the tablet?”
Sophie gave it to him.
“Only if you promise Mummy can’t erase it.”
“I promise.”
Matteo’s attorney reached for the device.
“That recording may have been obtained unlawfully.”
Lydia stepped between them.
“A child found it among property used to coach her testimony.
I will secure it.”
The attorney lowered his hand.
“My client will challenge it.”
“Your client has just admitted to a false laboratory test,” Raffaele said.
“A voice on a device admitted something.
Authentication comes first.”
Raffaele copied the file to Lydia’s secure account.
The progress bar reached completion as a car door slammed outside.
Victoria entered without knocking.
“Sophie, give me the tablet.”
“It is already copied,” Lydia said.
Victoria’s eyes moved to Raffaele.
“You cannot use a frightened child to save yourself.”
“You used two frightened children to enrich yourself.”
“You think I wanted this?” Victoria demanded.
“Matteo told me Noah’s trust would swallow everything.
He said Sophie and I would be left with nothing.”
“I offered you a home, security, and a family.”
“You offered me a place beneath a child who would always come first.”
“My son should come before your ambition.”
Victoria pointed at Noah.
“That boy is not even yours.”
Raffaele stepped in front of him.
“Say that again, and this conversation ends.”
“It ends when I decide.
Withdraw your accusations, restore the engagement, and give Sophie an equal share.
I will tell the court the incident was a misunderstanding.”
“You are trying to bargain with the children’s safety.”
“I am giving you a way to keep Noah.”
Sophie stared at her mother.
“What happens to me?”
Victoria’s expression flickered.
“You come home with me.”
“And if he says no?”
“Then he loses Noah, and we take what we deserve.”
Sophie moved behind Margaret.
“I don’t want to go with you.”
Victoria’s voice hardened.
“I am your mother.
You do not get to reject me.”
Lydia opened the front door.
“You need to leave.”
“This is between my family and me.”
“Your daughter has requested distance, and you just attempted to influence a witness.”
Victoria stepped toward Sophie.
Raffaele blocked her without touching her.
“Move,” Victoria said.
“No.”
“You have already lost one child tonight.
Do you want the court to see you take mine?”
“The court will see the recording.”
Victoria smiled.
“Then perhaps the court should also see the security footage of you forcing me against that divider.”
Raffaele’s face changed.
“I had cameras installed before the celebration,” she continued.
“Only Matteo controls the account.
By morning, every news outlet will have the footage without the moments that came before it.”
“You planned to remove the context,” Lydia said.
“I planned to protect myself.”
A phone vibrated in the attorney’s hand.
He read the message, then turned the screen away.
“What is it?” Victoria asked.
“The laboratory has denied issuing the report.”
Her confidence vanished.
“Matteo said it was handled.”
The tablet rang through Lydia’s secure account.
Matteo’s face appeared when she accepted the incoming call.
“You have property belonging to the trust,” he said.
“We have evidence of fraud,” Raffaele replied.
Matteo leaned toward the camera.
“By sunrise, there will be no original file, no security context, and no record connecting me to that laboratory.”
“Except your voice.”
“A clever imitation.
I will have experts say so.”
“You used Elena’s key.”
“And now I control Elena’s vault.
Whatever she left inside belongs to the acting trustee.”
Margaret stepped into view.
“Not everything.”
Matteo’s eyes narrowed.
“What do you mean?”
“Elena gave me a second key three days before she entered the hospital.”
May you like
Margaret reached beneath her collar and drew out a small brass key.
“She said I should use it if you ever tried to take Noah’s name away.”
