Chapter 2: The Message on Victoria’s Phone

Victoria clutched the ring and tried to laugh.
“You’re ending our marriage over a chair?”
“No,” Raffaele replied, lifting Noah into his arms.
“I’m ending it because you humiliated my son and expected me to reward you.”
Sophie suddenly slipped from her seat.
“Mummy said Noah wouldn’t live here after the wedding.”
Victoria’s face drained of color.
“Sophie, be quiet.”
Raffaele turned slowly.
“Where was my son supposed to go?”
“She misunderstood me,” Victoria said.
“Children invent things.”
“No, they repeat what frightens them,” Margaret Reed answered.
She pulled a folded document from her apron.
“And I found this beneath the papers in your study.”
Victoria lunged for it, but a bodyguard stepped between them.
Raffaele opened the document.
It was an unsigned application to send Noah to a distant residential school.
His own signature line had already been marked.
“I never signed this,” he said.
Before Victoria could answer, her phone lit up on the table.
A message appeared across the screen:
DID HE BELIEVE THE SCHOOL STORY?
ONCE NOAH IS GONE, SOPHIE GETS EVERYTHING.
Raffaele read it aloud.
Then Margaret stared at the number and whispered, “Sir…
I know who sent that.”
Victoria froze as Raffaele asked, “Who?”
