Chapter 2: Long Enough
His hands were shaking so hard he almost dropped the notebook.
"What is this, Vanessa?"
She didn't answer.
She just stood there, smoothing her dress like the question was an inconvenience.
"I said — what is this?"
"You're overreacting," she said calmly.
"Ethan has behavioral issues.
I was documenting them.
For his own good."
His father looked down at his son, still pressed against the wall, arms wrapped around his own chest.
"Ethan.
Did she ever hurt you?"
The boy didn't speak.
He just looked at Vanessa.
That look said everything.
Then Ethan's father flipped to the back of the notebook — and found something he hadn't seen before.
A folded document tucked inside the back cover.
It was a letter.
Addressed to a family court office.
Already signed.
Already dated.
Dated three days from now.
His father's voice dropped to almost nothing.
"How long have you been planning this?"
Vanessa finally smiled.
Not the warm smile he had fallen in love with.
A different one entirely.
"Long enough," she said.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He almost ignored it — but something made him answer.
The voice on the other end said four words that made his bl00d run c0ld.
"She's done this before."
