Chapter 2: The Folder on the Table

The entire table went silent.
Julian's hand was still stretched out in the air — the hand Arthur had completely ignored.
"You…
you two know each other?" Julian's voice came out thin, almost a whisper.
Arthur didn't even look at him.
"Know each other?" Arthur said calmly, his eyes still on me.
"She taught me how to ride a bike.
She worked two jobs to pay for my first year of college." He paused.
"She co-founded the fund that built your company, Julian."
Julian's boss slowly set down what remained of his wine glass.
"Valerie," Arthur said quietly, "why didn't you call me?"
I shook my head.
"I didn't want to make a scene."
"A scene." Arthur repeated the words slowly, then finally turned and looked at Julian for the first time.
His voice didn't rise.
It didn't need to.
"You handed your wife a card you knew would be declined.
In public.
On purpose."
Julian opened his mouth.
"Don't," Arthur said.
Evelyn stood up, pearls swinging.
"Now just a moment — you don't understand the full picture—"
"Mrs.
Crane." Arthur's assistant stepped forward and placed a thin folder on the table.
"I think you'll want to read page three before you finish that sentence."
Evelyn's hand froze on the folder.
Her face changed.
Whatever was on page three — she recognized it immediately.
---
What's on page three — and what does Evelyn recognize?
The truth is bigger than anyone at that table expected.
