Chapter 1: The Woman They Thought They Knew

"Try not to humiliate me tonight," Julian whispered, sliding my purse under the white linen tablecloth.
"The president of NovaMind could walk in at any moment, and I don't need him seeing that my wife makes a living selling cheap flowers."
I stared at him for a moment, then took a slow sip of mineral water.
We were seated in an upscale Manhattan restaurant—the kind of place where a single dinner cost more than most families spent on groceries in a month.
Julian had been talking about tonight for weeks.
He was the Vice President of Business Development at Hexa Group, and he was convinced that if he closed a partnership with NovaMind, he'd secure a promotion, company shares, and a seat right beside the C-suite.
Beside him sat his mother, Evelyn, wearing a massive pearl necklace and that tight, condescending smile she reserved for reminding me how "lucky" I was to have married her son.
"You could have at least worn something more elegant," Evelyn chimed in, eyeing my simple black dress.
"Julian is moving into a completely different social circle now, Valerie.
You can't keep showing up looking like you just finished potting plants."
My small flower shop in SoHo was the family's favorite punchline.
To them, I was just Valerie—the quiet wife who arranged bouquets while Julian "carried the entire financial burden."
I never corrected them.
I never told them that the brownstone we lived in on the Upper East Side was bought by me, in full, two years before I even met Julian.
Nor did I mention that the flower shop was simply the one place where I could work with my hands and breathe without hearing people talk about corporate investments, venture capital, and board meetings.
And I certainly never mentioned that eight years ago, I sold a logistics firm I co-founded with my father—and that a portion of those proceeds became Altura Capital, the private equity fund that currently financed several major tech companies.
Including NovaMind.
Julian checked his gold watch every thirty seconds.
"When Arthur Vance gets here, do not mention your little shop," he commanded.
"If he asks what you do, tell him you manage the household.
Smile.
That's it."
"You want me to be invisible?" I asked quietly.
"I want you not to ruin my future."
Evelyn let out a soft sneer.
"Don't be so dramatic.
You should be grateful my son gave you this lifestyle."
Then the bill arrived.
Julian had ordered dry-aged steaks, imported French wine, and side dishes no one touched.
The total came to over six thousand dollars.
He glanced at the leather folder, feigned searching his suit jacket, and then flashed an obnoxious grin across the table at his boss.
"My wife insisted on taking care of dinner tonight," Julian announced loudly.
"It's her way of showing appreciation for everything I do for her."
I saw right through it.
The debit card he had given me for "household groceries" had a ridiculously low daily limit.
He wanted the card to be declined right in front of his colleagues to put me in my place.
I handed the server the card anyway.
Two minutes later, the waiter returned, visibly uncomfortable.
"I'm sorry, ma'am.
The transaction was declined."
Julian immediately raised his voice so the surrounding tables could hear.
"Again, Valerie?
Can you seriously not even manage a basic credit card?"
Evelyn clutched her pearls, thoroughly enjoying the spectacle.
And then Julian delivered the final blow.
"Go wait for me by the coat check.
If the president of NovaMind arrives, I don't want him seeing you sitting here."
I stood up without arguing.
But before I took my second step, the restaurant's heavy glass doors swung open.
Six security guards entered first, clearing a path.
Behind them walked the man Julian had been desperately waiting for all evening.
My younger brother.
Arthur walked straight past the host, completely ignored my husband's outstretched, eager hand, and stopped right in front of me.
Before the entire crowded room, he bowed his head respectfully.
"Big sister," Arthur said clearly.
"Are these people bothering you?"
The wine glass in the hand of Julian's boss slipped, shattering against the floor.
And my husband's face went completely ghost-white...

What will Julian say when he realizes the president of NovaMind is Valerie's own brother?
