Chapter 9: The Morning It All Came Down

The warrants were executed at six a.m.

sharp across four locations simultaneously.

I wasn't there for any of them.

I was in a chair outside Nora's hospital room, holding a cup of coffee that had gone cold.

Grace sent updates by text.

Short, factual sentences that landed like quiet thunder.

*Holbrook offices secured.

IT team on site.*

*Kensington Construction — Richard Kensington detained for questioning.*

*University admin building — Dean Carver taken into custody.*

*Fitch law office — three attorneys present, all cooperating.*

Mitchell appeared in the hallway at seven thirty and sat down in the chair beside me.

He didn't say anything.

He just sat there, the way he used to sit through long nights in places I couldn't name, waiting for the next thing.

"Carver is talking," he said finally.

"Already?"

"Apparently he's been afraid of Fitch for years.

Once he understood Fitch was being taken down too, the calculation changed."

"What's he saying?"

"That the first incident — Emma Reyes — was handled entirely by Fitch on Holbrook's instruction.

Carver was told to make the student affairs complaint disappear and to ensure Pruitt understood what was expected of him.

Carver says he didn't know the extent of what happened to Emma.

He thought it was a — " Mitchell paused.

"He used the word 'altercation.'"

"He buried a report without asking what was in it."

"Yes."

"That's not a defense."

"No.

Grace agrees."

A doctor came down the hallway, nodded at us, went into Nora's room.

We waited.

He came back out two minutes later.

"Her vitals are strong," he said.

"We're going to do a follow-up imaging scan this afternoon.

If everything looks the way I expect, we can start talking about the surgical timeline."

"When?"

"End of the week, most likely.

The jaw reconstruction is complex, but she's young and she's strong.

She'll recover well."

He moved on.

Mitchell and I sat in silence for a moment.

"Wyatt Holbrook," I said.

"Where is he?"

"That's the one problem." Mitchell's voice was careful.

"He wasn't at any of the locations when the warrants were executed.

His apartment was empty.

His car is gone."

I set the coffee cup on the floor.

"He ran."

"It looks that way.

Grace has a BOLO out.

His passport was flagged at six fifteen — he tried to use it at a private airfield outside the city at five forty-eight.

The flight was already on the ground.

They missed him by twelve minutes."

Twelve minutes.

"He had someone warn him," I said.

"Yes.

We don't know who yet.

But he's in the country — the airfield confirmed the plane never departed.

Whatever transportation he arranged after that, he arranged in cash."

I thought about the text message.

*Let it go, Miller.* The photograph of Nora's room.

The calculation behind all of it — the precision, the preparation.

Wyatt Holbrook had been planning an exit before the warrants were even filed.

"Find him," I said.

"Bishop's already working it.

His phone is off, but there are other ways." Mitchell stood.

"There's something else.

Chad Kensington came in voluntarily this morning.

Before the warrant was even served.

His attorney — not Fitch, a different one — walked him into Grace's office at six thirty."

"He's cooperating?"

"Fully.

He's given a complete statement.

He's named Wyatt as the one who planned it, who chose Nora, who organized the cover-up.

He says he and Sterling went along because they were afraid of Wyatt."

"Afraid of a twenty-two-year-old."

"Wyatt Holbrook has watched his father make problems disappear his entire life," Mitchell said.

"That kind of power is frightening even to people who benefit from it."

I thought about that.

About what it meant to grow up watching consequences never arrive.

About what it did to a person.

"Does his statement help the case?"

"Enormously.

Grace says with Chad's testimony and Emma's statement and the footage, Wyatt Holbrook faces charges that no attorney — not even the best one money can buy — will be able to make disappear."

"If we find him."

"When we find him."

My phone rang.

Bishop.

May you like

"Commander.

We found Wyatt Holbrook."
