Chapter 2: They Knew Her Name Before I Did

Bishop called back forty minutes later.
"Commander.
The deleted footage isn't deleted.
It was moved.
Someone inside the university's security office copied it to a private server before wiping the campus system."
"Who?"
"A man named Gerald Pruitt.
Head of campus security.
He's been on Holbrook's family payroll for eleven years."
I said nothing.
"There's more," Bishop continued.
"Nora wasn't the first."
The hallway felt like it tilted.
"Two other girls.
Same campus.
Same pattern.
Both cases closed within a week.
No charges.
No records.
One family was paid off.
The other…" He paused.
"The other girl transferred and disappeared from public records entirely."
I looked through the glass at Nora.
The nurse was adjusting her IV.
My daughter hadn't moved.
"They've done this before," I said.
"At least twice that we can confirm."
Then Bishop's voice dropped lower.
"Commander.
Chad Kensington's father called the university president at 12:03 a.m.
Eighteen minutes after Nora was admitted.
He knew her name before the hospital had even contacted you."
My hand tightened around the phone.
Someone had been watching my daughter before that night.
This wasn't random.
This was planned.
Then my phone buzzed.
An unknown number.
A text message.
Four words.
*Let it go, Miller.*

They knew his name.
They knew his daughter.
And they thought that warning would stop him.
