Chapter 6: When Marcy Took the Stand

The holding-room door opened after sunrise.
Marcy entered with my wife and a lawyer Ruiz had contacted.
“You shouldn’t be here,” I said.
Marcy put both palms on the metal table.
“Please stop deciding where I should be.”
My wife sat beside her.
“Listen to her, Jack.”
The lawyer opened a folder.
“Conrad’s witnesses claim you entered the gym looking for a fight.
The original footage is gone, and the uploaded files were corrupted.”
“Graham saw everything.”
“Graham was arrested for helping conceal Evelyn’s abduction.”
Marcy’s face tightened.
“They arrested the victim’s husband?”
“They found Conrad’s payments in his account.”
My wife reached for my hand.
“Jack, they’re making Graham look like part of it.”
The door opened again.
Dustin walked in with his attorney.
“You wanted a deal?” the lawyer asked.
Dustin sat across from me.
“Withdraw every accusation against my uncle, admit you att@cked me, and I won’t press charges.”
Marcy turned toward him.
“You don’t get to offer my father mercy.”
“I’m offering your family a future.”
“You took mine apart for eight months.”
Dustin leaned back.
“No one will believe you after they see your messages.”
He slid printed pages across the table.
The messages appeared to come from Marcy’s phone.
I NEED MONEY.
IF YOU LEAVE ME, I’LL TELL EVERYONE YOU H*RT ME.
My wife covered her mouth.
“They’re fake,” Marcy said.
Dustin smiled.
“Prove it.”
Her chair scraped backward.
Tears ran down her face.
“I can’t do this again.”
She turned toward the door.
Dustin’s smile widened.
“That’s what I thought.”
I stood, but the guard moved between us.
My wife reached Marcy first and held both her hands.
“Look at me,” she said.
“You do not have to sound fearless to tell the truth.”
Marcy shook her head.
“They’ll call me a liar.”
“Then let them hear you while your voice shakes.”
“I brought him into our lives.”
“No,” my wife said.
“He entered with a smile and hid what he was.
Trusting someone is not permission for them to h*rt you.”
Marcy pressed her forehead against her mother’s shoulder and sobbed.
My wife held her tighter.
“Cry here.
Then decide what you want to do next.”
Marcy lifted her head several seconds later.
“I want to speak.”
Dustin’s attorney stood.
“This meeting is over.”
“No,” Marcy said.
“It’s finally beginning.”
She sat across from Dustin.
“You made me apologize after every bruise.”
Dustin glanced at his attorney.
“Don’t answer that.”
“You told me my father was too old to protect me and my mother would lose her job.”
“Marcy, you’re confused.”
“You made one mistake.”
His smile faltered.
“You dictated those messages while my phone was connected to your home Wi-Fi,” she said.
Dustin’s attorney turned slowly.
“Is that true?”
Dustin said nothing.
Ruiz entered with a state investigator carrying a laptop.
“We obtained the router logs,” she said.
“And the service provider preserved every login.”
The investigator placed the screen in front of Dustin’s attorney.
“The messages were created from a cloned account twelve minutes after Marcy was admitted to the hospital.”
Dustin pushed his chair back.
“My uncle handled that.”
His attorney caught his sleeve.
“Do not say another word.”
Ruiz leaned over the table.
“Thank you, Dustin.
We were wondering who ordered it.”
His face went pale.
The guard opened the door, but another officer blocked it.
“Dustin Vale, you are being detained for witness intimidation and fabrication of evidence.”
Dustin looked at Marcy.
“You think this makes you strong?”
She wiped her face with both hands.
“No.
Telling the truth while I was terrified made me strong.”
As they removed him, Ruiz unlocked my restraints.
“Your ass@ult charge is suspended pending review.”
“Suspended?”
“Conrad still has Deputy Chief Warren.”
The state investigator turned the laptop toward us.
A bank ledger filled the screen.
Payments ran from Conrad’s company to Warren, two hospital employees, and three officers.
One payment had been made that morning.
The recipient’s name was Graham Bell.
My wife stared at it.
“But Graham helped us.”
May you like
Ruiz closed the laptop.
“Then either Graham betrayed us—or Conrad is about to make sure no one believes another word he says.”
