Chapter 2: The Voice from Quantico

My smile vanished when the phone rang.

Unknown number.

“Is this Marcy’s father?” a man asked.

“Who wants to know?”

“You made a serious mistake humiliating my nephew.”

Dustin’s uncle.

I put the call on speaker.

My wife gripped the table, but Marcy stepped closer.

“He can’t scare us anymore,” she said.

The man laughed softly.

“The recording won’t protect you.

Ask the detectives what happened to their warrant.”

A hard knock sounded at our door.

One of the detectives from the gym stood outside, holding a sealed envelope.

“Dustin was released,” he said.

“Someone above me ordered it.

Your evidence file also disappeared overnight.”

Marcy’s face drained of color.

“That’s impossible,” I said.

“I made copies.”

The detective glanced toward the street.

“Then hide them.

Someone accessed your address, your wife’s workplace, and Marcy’s hospital records.”

My phone was still on speaker.

Dustin’s uncle spoke again.

“You always taught your Marines to prepare for everything.”

I froze.

Then he said the name no one had called me since Quantico.

The detective stared at me.

“You know him?”

I did.

And suddenly, I understood why Dustin’s uncle had been untouchable for so long.

The man from my past knew every rule I lived by—and exactly how to use them against Marcy.
