Chapter 2: What Ruth Remembered

The room was silent.
Evelyn stared at the documents.
Her hands were shaking.
Then she laughed.
"Those papers mean nothing," she said.
"Daniel will contest the will.
Won't you, Daniel."
It wasn't a question.
Daniel set down his wine glass slowly.
He looked at me.
Then at his mother.
Then at Noah, still wiping tears from his face.
And he said nothing.
"Daniel." Evelyn's voice dropped.
"Tell her."
He still didn't speak.
That was when Evelyn's sister, Ruth, stood up from the far end of the table.
"Evelyn," Ruth said quietly.
"Sit down."
"Don't you start—"
"I said sit down." Ruth's voice didn't rise.
But something in it made everyone go still.
"Because if this goes any further…
I will tell them what you did to get your name on the original deed twenty years ago."
Evelyn's face changed.
Not anger.
Not shock.
Fear.
Noah reached up and took my hand.
His fingers were cold.
And I realized — this wasn't just about the inheritance.
There was something buried in this family long before my father ever wrote his will.
