Chapter 6: What the Camera Saw

Detective Shaw took the drive but did not insert it into her laptop.

“Tell me what’s on it.”

“Footage from a transport van,” Owen said.

“And the full recording from Caroline’s phone.”

“Why did you keep it?”

Owen looked at Caroline’s neck brace.

“Vivian said you had left willingly.

Then I saw you walk into that hall.”

“You still took her money,” Graham said.

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Twenty thousand dollars.”

Caroline studied him.

“Why help me now?”

Owen removed an envelope from his jacket and placed it on the table.

“The money is all there.

My sister disappeared for two days when she was nineteen.

People called her unstable instead of looking for her.

I told myself your situation was different.”

He pushed the envelope toward Shaw.

“It wasn’t.”

Shaw connected the drive.

Video appeared from the dashboard of a van parked behind a roadside garage.

Vivian entered the frame and handed a mechanic a packet.

Her voice came through clearly.

“Make sure Caroline’s car doesn’t reach the county line.”

The mechanic glanced at the packet.

“Damaged brakes can raise questions.”

“Only if they find the car quickly.”

Graham stood so suddenly that his chair fell.

“You did this to her.”

The door opened.

Vivian entered with Martin behind her.

“This meeting is over,” Martin said.

Shaw closed the laptop.

“It has barely begun.”

Vivian looked at Owen.

“You pathetic little thief.”

“I returned your money.”

“You think that protects you?”

“No.

Telling the truth does.”

Vivian turned to Caroline.

“You don’t know what that video means.”

“It means you paid someone to tamper with my car.”

“It shows me paying for repairs.”

“Before the car broke down?” Shaw asked.

Martin placed both hands on the table.

“My client will answer no further questions.”

Vivian ignored him.

“Caroline, I can return Graham’s company.

I can restore your mother’s cottage and give you enough money to disappear somewhere comfortable.”

Graham stepped between them.

“She already disappeared once because of you.”

Vivian’s eyes hardened.

“Then perhaps next time nobody will find her.”

Shaw rose.

“That sounded like a threat.”

“It was a warning about her health.”

Caroline faced Vivian.

“Why me?”

“Because Graham never stopped measuring me against you.”

“You were my friend.”

“I was your shadow.”

“No.

You stood beside me because I trusted you.”

“And you had everything without earning it.”

Caroline touched her brace.

“So you tried to take my husband, my name, and my life?”

Vivian lunged for the laptop.

Owen caught her wrist before she reached it.

Martin backed toward the door.

“Do not touch me!” Vivian shouted.

Shaw placed herself between Vivian and the evidence.

“Step away.”

Vivian grabbed a glass vase from the table and lifted it over the laptop.

Eleanor appeared in the doorway.

“Put it down, Vivian.”

For one second, mother and daughter stared at each other.

Then Vivian let the vase fall.

Owen caught it against his chest.

A second man stood behind Eleanor.

Dr.

Nolan’s shoulders were bent, and his face was gray.

Caroline whispered, “You signed my certificate.”

Dr.

Nolan nodded.

“Vivian brought me hospital records and said you had been transferred under another name.

Then she showed me photographs of my son accepting illegal payments.”

“Were they real?” Shaw asked.

“One was.

The rest were altered.”

“You declared me de@d without seeing me?”

His eyes filled.

“Yes.”

Caroline’s hand closed around Graham’s.

Dr.

Nolan set a folder on the table.

“I kept the original request Vivian sent me.

It includes the false patient number and instructions to file before Graham could ask questions.”

Martin moved toward the folder.

Shaw blocked him.

“Sit down.”

Vivian backed into the hallway.

“You’re all forgetting something.

If I fall, Hale Industries falls with me.”

Edwin entered from the opposite door.

“What did you do?” he asked.

May you like

Vivian smiled at him.

“Ask yourself where the money that saved your company fifteen years ago really came from.”
