THE WOMAN IN THE AISLE / Chapter 2 / 8

Chapter 2: The Voice on the Recording

Vivian gripped Graham’s arm.

“Don’t listen to her.

She isn’t well.”

Caroline touched the edge of her neck brace.

“Is that what you told everyone?

That I was confused before I disappeared?”

Graham pulled his arm away from Vivian.

“You told me Caroline was de@d.

You said the hospital confirmed it.”

“They did!” Vivian cried.

“This woman is lying!”

The older man stepped into the aisle.

“Then explain why you refused to let Graham identify her.”

Vivian froze.

Caroline reached inside her coat and removed a clear plastic bag.

Inside was a cracked phone.

“I was found beside the road three days ago,” she said.

“The doctors didn’t know my name.

But this morning, they managed to recover one recording.”

“Caroline, stop,” Vivian whispered.

Graham stared at his bride.

“Why are you afraid of that phone?”

“I’m not.”

Caroline pressed the screen.

Vivian’s voice filled the silent hall.

“Once the wedding is over, everything Graham owns will be under my control.”

Gasps rose from the guests, but then a second voice came through the speaker—a man’s voice that Graham clearly recognized.

His face went pale as he turned toward the older man.

“Dad,” he whispered.

“Why are you on that recording?”
