Chapter 7: The Truth Spoken in the Ballroom

Evelyn stared at the locked door.

“Why is your name on that report?” Adrien demanded.

“I was a trainee dispatcher that year.”

“You took the call?”

“I received a request from the hotel loading entrance.

A man said an intoxicated guest had fallen but was awake.”

“Was it my father?”

“He used Conrad’s name.”

Conrad shook his head.

“I made no call.”

Evelyn gripped the edge of the boiler.

“I classified it as non-urgent.

When a second call came, I sent help immediately.”

“Forty-three minutes later.”

“Yes.”

Adrien stepped back as if she had pushed him.

“You knew?”

“Not until Mother showed me the report six months ago.”

“And you said nothing.”

“I was ashamed.”

Lila looked up at Evelyn.

“Could you have saved Mommy?”

Evelyn’s face crumpled.

“I don’t know, sweetheart.”

Adrien closed his eyes.

Noah touched his hand.

“Daddy, don’t go quiet too.”

Adrien gathered the children against him, but his legs gave way.

Evelyn knelt opposite him.

“Say what you need to say,” she whispered.

“You helped him hide it.”

“Yes.”

“You watched me search.”

“Yes.”

“You looked at my children every day.”

“Yes.” Tears ran down her face.

“And every day I hated the coward who kept choosing one more day of silence.”

Rose’s voice sounded through Conrad’s tablet.

She was wearing a microphone from her uniform.

“Victor, let go of me.”

Conrad turned up the sound.

Victor answered, “Tell Adrien the dispatcher ignored Marina on purpose.”

“That is a lie.”

“It becomes truth when enough people repeat it.”

Adrien rose.

“Where are they?”

Conrad traced the microphone signal.

“Ballroom stage.”

They raced up the service stairs.

In the ballroom, guests stood beneath frozen images of Victor threatening Marina.

Victor held Rose beside the podium.

State investigator Helen Ward faced him from the aisle.

“Release Mrs.

Mercer,” Ward said.

“Rose came willingly.”

“No, I didn’t,” Rose replied.

Victor tightened his hand around her arm.

“Careful.”

Adrien entered with the triplets.

Every phone turned toward them.

“Let her go, Father.”

Victor faced the crowd.

“My son is grieving and unstable.

These people manipulated three traumatized children to seize my property.”

Margaret raised Clara’s cassette.

“Then let Clara speak.”

Victor froze.

Margaret handed the cassette to Conrad, who placed it in the ballroom’s audio system.

Clara’s voice filled the room.

“If Victor tells Adrien this hotel belongs to him, he is lying.

The Grand Aurelia belongs to my son.

Victor has been moving money from Adrien’s trust, and I fear what he will do if I confront him alone.”

Victor reached for the controls.

Ward stepped in front of him.

“That recording proves nothing.”

Margaret held up her phone.

“Your confession does.”

“What confession?”

Rose pulled the tiny microphone from her collar.

Victor looked toward the ballroom speakers as his own words replayed:

“It becomes truth when enough people repeat it.”

Chief Owen entered behind two state officers.

He pointed at Victor.

“He gave me the false order.

He paid me to enforce it before anyone checked the signature.”

Victor’s head snapped toward him.

“You spineless fool.”

Owen removed his badge and placed it in Ward’s hand.

“I’ll provide every message.”

Victor backed toward the side exit.

“Adrien, stop this now.

I can still protect your children from the scandal.”

“You used them to control Marina.”

“I preserved this family.”

“You delayed help while my wife suffered.”

“Marina should have accepted my offer.”

The ballroom went silent.

Ward lifted her radio.

“That was heard by every person in this room.”

Victor reached into his coat and pulled out Marina’s missing handbag.

He removed a memory card and snapped it between his fingers.

“There,” he said.

“Your final proof is gone.”

Lila stepped forward holding her toy rabbit.

“No,” she said.

“Mommy hid the other one in here.”

She opened a seam beneath the rabbit’s ear and handed Adrien a tiny card.

Victor stared at her.

“You were too young to remember.”

Lila moved behind her father.

“I remembered everything.”

Ward signaled to the officers.

They took Victor by both arms.

He looked at Adrien as they led him away.

“When they turn on you, remember that I was the only one strong enough to keep the Belandi name alive.”

Adrien held Marina’s memory card against his heart.

May you like

“No, Father.

Marina was strong enough to end it.”
