Chapter 1: The Room Beneath the Hotel

"THE THREE CHILDREN WHO HAD NOT SPOKEN IN TWO YEARS GRABBED A WAITRESS’S APRON AND WHISPERED “CELLAR”—THEN ADRIEN FOUND A HIDDEN ROOM BENEATH THE GRAND AURELIA CONTAINING PHOTOGRAPHS OF HIS FAMILY TAKEN YEARS BEFORE MARINA D!ED
Evelyn’s mother had been employed at the hotel.
That part was true.
What nobody explained to Evelyn was why she disappeared afterward.
Adrien unlocked the cellar room his children recalled.
Inside were blankets.
Children’s toys.
Emergency food.
And dozens of surveillance photographs.
Adrien.
Marina.
The triplets.
Some were captured before the children were born.
Then Adrien discovered a faded photograph of himself at sixteen.
Someone had been observing him for decades.
Evelyn knew the handwriting beneath it.
Her mother’s.
“THE BELANDI BOY STILL DOESN’T KNOW WHY HIS FATHER BOUGHT THIS HOTEL.”
Adrien froze.
His father had always insisted the Grand Aurelia was just an investment.
Then Lila gestured toward a rusty cabinet.
Inside lay Marina’s missing phone.
One unsent message remained:
“IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TONIGHT, EVELYN’S MOTHER KNOWS WHO BUILT THE CELLAR.”
Evelyn turned pale.
Her mother had been declared de@d eighteen months earlier.
But hotel records showed someone using her employee key only three days ago."
