Chapter 2: The Name on the Screen

Part 2 ⬇️
I stood there dripping, Sophie shaking in my arms, and I stared at that key.
Vanessa moved toward it fast.
Too fast.
"Give that to me," she said.
Her voice was quiet.
Controlled.
Like she was trying not to scream.
"Why?" I stepped back.
"What does it open?"
"It's nothing.
It's mine."
Sophie pressed her face into my shoulder.
"She was looking for it, Daddy.
She cut Mommy's bear open before.
I saw her."
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked at the key.
"You've been searching for this," I said.
"That's why you married me."
"Don't be ridiculous."
"Sophie's mother left this behind.
Hidden inside a bear she gave to a six-year-old.
She didn't want you to find it."
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
"You don't know what you're talking about."
"Then explain it."
She didn't.
She just stared at me with something I had never seen on her face before.
Not guilt.
Not fear.
Something colder than both.
I pulled Sophie closer and picked up the key.
That was when my phone rang.
The name on the screen stopped my heart.
It was my late wife's sister.
A woman I hadn't spoken to in three years.
And the first thing she said was: "Did Vanessa find it yet?"
---
What did my wife's sister know — and how long had she been waiting for this call?
