Chapter 1: The Bear She Wanted Gone

The Stepmother Dragged Sophie By The Hair Toward The Pool While She Begged For Her Mother's Teddy Bear.

Sophie was only six.

Her tiny hands were slipping against the wet edge.

Her face was full of terror.

And floating beside her was the old teddy bear her late mother had left her.

Vanessa stood above the pool, smiling.

She did not scream.

She did not reach for Sophie.

She just watched.

"Daddy!" Sophie cried.

"Help me!"

I ran so fast I barely felt the ground.

Vanessa turned like she had been caught doing nothing.

But I had already seen enough.

I pushed her away from the pool and jumped in after my daughter.

Sophie clung to my neck, coughing and sobbing.

"She threw Mommy's bear," she whispered.

When I pulled the soaked teddy bear from the water, something fell from the torn seam.

A small key landed on the patio.

Vanessa's face went white.

And that was when I understood why she wanted that bear gone.
