Chapter 5: The Price of Silence

Connor placed the recorder on Loretta’s dining table that evening.

Rachel sat beside Amy, while Nora remained near the door.

Loretta did not touch the device.

“Recording a private conversation may be unlawful.”

“It was recorded in a room full of people,” Rachel said.

“And your voice is clear.”

Loretta looked at Nora.

“You would betray your own sister?”

Nora folded her arms.

“I protected my grandniece.”

“You’ve always resented me.”

“This isn’t about childhood.

It’s about what you did yesterday.”

Loretta turned to Amy.

“Withdraw your accusation, and I’ll withdraw the guardianship petition.”

Amy stared at her.

“You accused me first.”

“I expressed concern.”

“You tricked me into signing a legal document.”

“You should read before signing.”

Connor’s palm struck the table.

The recorder jumped, but Lily slept in Amy’s arms.

“Stop blaming her for trusting you.”

Loretta opened a drawer and removed a second folder.

“Very well.

If you want a fight, read this.”

She slid a signed note toward Connor.

It stated that the money used for his house deposit was a repayable loan.

Payment could be demanded with thirty days’ notice.

Amy looked at him.

“Did you sign this?”

“I signed a gift acknowledgment.

That isn’t the wording I saw.”

“Another document you failed to read?” Loretta asked.

Connor held it toward the light.

“This second page was added.”

Loretta leaned back.

“Prove it.”

Rachel photographed the staple holes.

“The first page has been fastened twice.

The second only once.”

For one second, Loretta’s smile vanished.

Then she pointed at Amy.

“Leave Connor, sign guardianship over to me, and I will forgive the house debt.

You can start again without financial pressure.”

Amy rose, holding Lily close.

“You think I can be purchased because you never understood why your son loves me.”

“I understand that he enjoyed rescuing you.”

“No,” Connor said.

“Amy rescued me from believing control was the same thing as love.”

Loretta’s fingers tightened around the folder.

“You’ll lose the house.”

“Then we’ll rent.”

“You’ll lose the trust.”

“It was never mine.”

“You’ll lose this family.”

Connor looked at Nora, then at Amy.

“My family is standing beside me.”

Rachel opened the copy of Walter’s trust.

A bank statement had been clipped behind the guardian provision.

“Loretta, why did you withdraw eighteen thousand four hundred dollars from Lily’s care account last month?”

Loretta grabbed for the statement.

Nora caught her arm.

“Don’t touch it.”

“That money paid for family expenses,” Loretta said.

“Name them,” Amy replied.

“The shower, nursery furniture, clothing.”

“The shower was at our house,” Connor said.

“We paid for it.

Lily’s nursery is furnished with secondhand pieces from Amy’s sister.”

Loretta pulled free of Nora.

“Walter named me trustee.

I don’t answer to any of you.”

“You answer to the terms of the trust,” Rachel said.

“And possibly to a probate judge.”

The doorbell rang.

A courier handed Rachel an envelope addressed to Amy and Connor.

She opened it while everyone watched.

“What does it say?” Amy asked.

Rachel’s expression hardened.

“A commissioner has entered an interim order.

Until Monday’s hearing, Amy cannot be alone with Lily without approved supervision.”

Loretta lifted her chin.

Amy’s breath caught as she read the final line.

Loretta had been named the approved supervisor.
