Chapter 2: The Hidden Document
Amy’s hands began to shake.
The baby stirred against her chest, and Connor gently took the wet plate from her fingers.
Loretta recovered her voice.
“Don’t make a scene.
Everyone helped today.”
“No,” Amy whispered.
“They ate.
I served them.
Then your mother sent me back in here.”
Connor stared at Loretta.
“She’s been caring for our baby all day.
Why didn’t anyone help her?”
“She needed to earn her place in this family,” Loretta snapped.
Amy flinched.
Connor reached for her coat, but Loretta suddenly stepped in front of the doorway.
“She can’t leave yet.”
“Move, Mom.”
Loretta folded her arms.
“Ask your wife what she signed this morning.”
Connor turned to Amy.
“What is she talking about?”
“I don’t know.
She told me it was only a delivery receipt.”
Loretta’s face tightened.
Connor noticed a white envelope partly hidden beneath one of the gift bags.
He pulled it free and removed a folded document.
At the bottom was Amy’s signature.
Connor read the first line, then slowly looked at his mother.
“You told her this was a receipt?”
Loretta reached for the paper.
“Give me that.”
But Connor stepped back—and Amy saw the one sentence that made her heart stop.
