Chapter 2: Three Months of Watching

The hallway went completely still.
Bennett's face drained of color.
His mouth opened, then closed.
For the first time since I'd known him, he had nothing to say.
"Director Calloway," he finally managed.
"I didn't realize you were—"
"I know you didn't." Uncle Richard's voice was quiet.
That was the part that scared people.
He never raised it.
"That's been your problem from the beginning."
Margot dropped Bennett's arm.
Uncle Richard stepped past them both and crouched beside me.
He took my hand the way he used to when I was twelve and my parents were gone and he was the only person left who showed up.
"Can you walk?" he asked softly.
"I've been walking," I said.
"Nobody noticed."
He stood.
Turned to face Bennett fully.
"This hospital has forty-three cameras in this corridor alone," he said.
"Every second of what just happened is already saved." He looked at Margot.
"Both of you will want to think very carefully about your next move."
Bennett straightened his tie.
"Richard, whatever Tessa has told you—"
"She hasn't told me anything." Uncle Richard's eyes didn't move.
"I've been watching for three months."
My breath caught.
Three months.
That meant he knew things even I didn't know yet.
Bennett's watch caught the light as his hand trembled slightly.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
And so did Uncle Richard.
