Chapter 7: The Box at First Chicago Trust

At eight the next morning, Luca, Matteo, Evelyn and I entered First Chicago Trust with two officers and a court-appointed examiner.

The bank manager met us outside the vault.

“There is a problem,” she said.

“Someone presented a key at seven thirty.”

“Who?” Luca asked.

“Vanessa Bellini and Damian Cross.”

Vanessa stepped from the adjoining office.

“You’re too late.”

Damian stood behind her with an empty document pouch.

Evelyn tightened her grip on her cane.

“You stole my key.”

“You left it in an unlocked desk.”

“That does not make it yours.”

Damian raised the court order.

“As former trust counsel, I was preserving relevant materials.”

The examiner took the order from him.

“This authorizes preservation, not removal.”

“The box was empty.”

The bank manager shook her head.

“No, it wasn’t.”

Vanessa turned.

“You said there were no cameras inside the vault.”

“There aren’t.

But you signed an inventory receipt.”

The manager held up a carbon copy bearing Vanessa’s signature.

Three items were listed: a letter, an original trust declaration and a digital storage device.

Vanessa looked at Damian.

“You told me to sign it.”

“And you took the items,” he replied.

“Not me.”

Luca stepped between them.

“Where are they?”

Vanessa clutched her purse.

“Restore our engagement and I’ll tell you.”

“No.”

“You haven’t heard my terms.”

“I heard them when you sent my son away from my table.”

“You’ll lose the trust.”

“Then I’ll rebuild every dollar for him.

I won’t rebuild a life with you.”

Her fingers closed around the purse strap.

“What about Claire?

Ask her why she stayed so close to Matteo.”

I faced her.

“Because he was hurting.”

“Her father once worked for Moretti Shipping.”

Luca looked at me.

“Is that true?”

“Yes.

He was a mechanic at the South Yard.”

Vanessa smiled.

“He lost his pension after an internal investigation signed by Luca.”

The words knocked the breath from me.

Luca’s face tightened.

“What was your father’s name?”

“Patrick Dawson.”

“I remember the file.

Damian brought it to me.”

Damian moved toward the exit.

The officer blocked him again.

“I signed what counsel placed in front of me,” Luca said.

“Claire, I didn’t know Patrick was your father.”

“My father spent his last year believing you called him dishonest.”

Damian spoke quickly.

“Patrick altered maintenance records.”

“No,” Evelyn said.

“Sarah investigated that matter too.”

She opened the digital family account on her tablet.

“Sarah’s index lists Patrick Dawson as a witness against Damian’s billing scheme.”

I turned to Damian.

“You ruined my father because he found you taking money?”

“He violated confidentiality.”

“He told the truth.”

Damian looked at Luca.

“Give me the receipt and let us leave.

I’ll return Sarah’s letter.”

“You’re offering stolen property in exchange for evidence.”

“I’m offering you a way to keep your family name out of court.”

Matteo stepped forward.

“My mother’s name deserves court more than yours deserves protection.”

Damian’s eyes hardened.

“You sound just like her.”

Vanessa pulled a flash drive from her purse.

“Take it, Luca.

I’ll give you the letter after Damian guarantees my settlement.”

“There is no settlement,” Damian said.

“You promised me half of the amended trust.”

“And you failed.”

Vanessa’s hand began to shake.

“You said Luca would blame Claire.”

“I overestimated you.”

The bank manager touched a control beneath her desk.

The office door opened, and two investigators entered.

The examiner held up the inventory receipt.

“We heard enough.”

Damian turned toward Vanessa.

“You foolish, greedy woman.”

She laughed once, without warmth.

“You wrote every document.”

“And you signed every request.”

The investigators separated them.

One recovered Sarah’s letter from Damian’s coat; the original trust was folded inside Vanessa’s purse.

Vanessa stopped beside Luca before they led her away.

“I could have given you a new family.”

Luca put one hand on Matteo’s shoulder.

“You tried to make me betray the one I already had.”

Damian’s final words came from the doorway.

“You still signed it, Luca.

Everyone will know how easily you were deceived.”

Luca looked at Claire.

“Then everyone will also know who had the courage to stop me.”

As the door closed, the examiner unfolded Sarah’s letter.

The first line was addressed not to Luca—but to Matteo.
